Canada official eats seal heart

Ms Jean said the raw seal heart was delicious

Canada's governor general, Michaelle Jean, has helped to butcher and eat a seal in an apparent act of solidarity with hunters.

Ms Jean used a traditional Inuit knife to help gut the animal then ate a slice of raw heart.

It came weeks after the EU voted to ban Canadian seal products, but Ms Jean did not say if her actions were in response to the EU proposals.

An EU spokeswoman said the story was "too bizarre to acknowledge".

The governor general is the representative of Canada's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II.

Ms Jean was touring northern Canadian communities and was at a festival at Rankin Inlet on Monday attended by hundreds of Inuit when she ate the seal heart.

Asked later if her actions were a message to the EU, she said: "Take from it what you will."

Hunting is 'crucial'

The European Parliament recently voted in favour of the ban on Canadian seal products in protest against commercial seal hunting methods.

10. Oh sweet Jesus, I won't soon forget that- unless I mistakenly categorize it as a dream.
I'm gonna watch that again. The sad part is it's surreal to me- when it's the realist, truest meal there is for any carnivore. I think if I ever ate a seal like that, I'd have to have sex on the skin...all-slippin' around and wiping the sweat from your brow...leaving bloddy streaks across your face.

I mean, if you're going to go Buffalo Bill on something, go all the way.

14. Very true- I (no sarcasm) think the saddest thing is my gut response.
These are native people doing what they and my ancestors have (essentially) done for millenia. The strong disconnect between my concept of "eating" and what I saw is a testament to how incredibly removed I, and perhaps others, are from the basic realities of life.

A jackass like me might hop on a bike and go zooming into the beautiful forests around here- and feel as though I'd communed with Nature in all those deep, meaningful ways that are important. It's the thinnest veneer of some connection with the realities of life, though- and this video reminds one of that.

7. Seal meat is a vital part of the traditional Inuit diet.
Whales are also harvested by these communities. They also depend on Fish and Caribou. Sustaining quantities of vegetable matter are hard to find north of 60 degrees. If the population isn't endangered I simply don't see a problem with seal hunting any more than with caribou hunting or fishing.

11. she's like goddess kali
feasting on the heart of a mammal, in solidarity with the people she has sworn to protect. And doing it with Grace.

Not that Kali has no grace, but in case anyone had doubts.

15. If Inuit were to club a baby seal to death it would not upset me as much...
...as if Canadian seal hunters were to do it. I'm not saying its right or wrong. I guess it comes down to motivations, for me. Other people's motivations for doing things are a big part of how I interpret the world.

Moral relativism? Maybe. I dunno. Some sort of realism? It feels like it, but I'm dubious.

In the scenario I described, the seal's still getting beaten to death. Interesting how the last thing I consider is the seal's point of view.
