Defense chief praises soldier in pink boxers
GI jumped into action with flip-flops, too, after surprise Taliban attack

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Robert Gates says American soldiers have more than their military might and training on their side in the war in Afghanistan. Some have pink underwear.

Gates told an audience in New York about Specialist Zachary Boyd, routed from sleep by enemy fire on his post in eastern Afghanistan.

"He immediately grabbed his rifle and rushed into a defensive position clad in his helmet, body armor, and pink boxer shorts that said 'I Love New York,'" Gates said Thursday night

1. Here's Gates' best comment on it:
"Any soldier who goes into battle against the Taliban in pink boxers and flip-flops has a special kind of courage," Gates said, adding that Boyd may have hit on a new kind of psychological warfare. "I can only wonder about the impact on the Taliban.

Just imagine seeing that — a guy in pink boxers and flip-flops has you in his crosshairs."

2. Yeah, it's fucking hilarious.
Makes me proud to be an American, sending other Americans to kill and die in our name ... as long as they keep killing "those little brown people" in a land we have no right to continue occupying. :eyes:

"Reload Sweetheart! Those bastards are not all dead yet."

5. bravery?!? I have no reason to not respect this man, but this is a PR story that I
will not "buy into."

I'll save my respect for those who choose NOT to glorify the absurdity of war.

Insead of these CUTE stories, we need to continue to rededicate our efforts to educate the public on the HORRORS OF WAR. War is, after all, nothing less than State Sponsored Terrorism. :(

8. Cute - are you serious
i don't find anything "Cute" about warfare, the journalist who took the photos and the editors who published it thought it was a story commenting on the humanization of the war in afghanistan. So buy no buying into the story you reject the humanization and realization of the true war costs. - i guess you just like the pretty posters like the ones you posted instead of the realities of what is actually going on - open your eyes

7. Au Contraire, I excelled in my Military Science courses sufficiently to glean a RA Commission.
I know of which I speak and have friends and family over in the ME Arena right now.

Believe it our not, most of the soldiers on BOTH sides of these ILLEGAL occupations are NOT inherently evil.

Stop drinking the warmonger's koo laid and read a little old time Smedley Butler.

My father, brother and myself served in the active duty Army. My dad was battlefield commissioned during WWII and held onto his commission to retire as a Major. My brother fought with the 101sth Airborne during the Vietnam "Conflict." I served during for four years during the 1980s.

I love the Army as well as the military. My late beloved Father said, "Everyday in the Army is like Sunday on the Farm." Our military service treated us all well. After I resigned my commission, I was able to use the educational benefits (VEAP) to earn my masters in 1990.

HOWEVER, as much as I look back on all the "good times" training and serving the the Army, I never wanted our BELOVED COUNTRY to become entangled into UNJUST WARS.

Many of us 50 y.o. plus remember saying after Vietnam: NEVER AGAIN.

Well, I'm walking the walk. People can LOVE their country and the military WHILE in marked protest of Our Government's profound wrongdoing.

More than anything, I'm profoundly saddened that the military that I have known and loved is mired down TWO senseless occupations. Our troops deserve leadership of higher integrity than what we have had to endure over the course of the past eight years.
