Aretha Wants Royalties For Wearing Inaugural Hat
Vickie Thomas, Scott Ryan Reporting

Detroit (WWJ) -- Mr. Song Millinery on Woodward Avenue in Detroit has struck a sour note with Aretha Franklin. It was her inaugural hat that caused a flood of orders from around the world. And now, the Queen of Soul wants royal treatment from store owner Luke Song for wearing it.

"I think that I should be getting big time royalties from him. That's what I think," said Franklin in an interview with WWJ's Vickie Thomas at Sunday's NAACP Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner.

Aretha said she's not even getting free hats for all the publicity that her heady accessory generated in January. "I was disappointed when I said, 'am I getting all my hats free now? He said, 'well...uh....' I said, 'oh no you won't!'"

Franklin chose a custom-made black hat with a giant bow that wowed the crowed as she sang "America the Beautiful" at the Jan. 20 ceremony in Washington, D.C. The hat retailed for $179, though hers cost about three times that.

1. one free hat might be acceptable, but for life? you could order so many free hats
he could spend the rest of his life working on your hats alone...I think one free hat should be about right?

4. thinks she's a diva....BUT
The Queen of Soul abdicated the throne. For 25 years the only thing she has produced is verbiage extolling her greatness. IF a queen she be it is of Cholesterol Consumption!

She shouldn't get anything, unless the hat maker is generous enough. I tell ya some people think they are so damn important.

8. This is amusing.
Ms. Ree, are you getting royalties from other hat-topped appearances? If it's your work at the Inauguration of President of Obama that is generating the sudden interest in "your" wardrobe, perhaps you should consider the possibility that it's not about you.

10. Not surprising from her, Aretha never met a bill she didn't try to stiff or a payday she didn't want

11. $179 x 3 = $537. Why, that's almost enough for a pair of shoes!
How dare she, when there are homeless and hungry people all over the country. Doesn't she know that there may have been poor people watching the performance, people who can't afford that sort of extravagance?

:sarcasm:

12. Mr. Song donated a work to The Pink Fund
Mr. Song's new hat was auctioned off on April 24 on eBay to benefit The Pink Fund.
The organization serves families and individuals suffering from breast cancer.

Aretha must not know.
