"Does this virus mean I shouldn't eat pork?

No. This virus is named swine flu because one of its surface proteins is most similar to viruses that usually infect pigs. But we've never seen this particular virus in pigs before. It is spreading in people; that's the problem."

I have seen a lot of people jumping to conclusions today and just wanted to clear the air.

1. Glad you posted this. While at grocery store a couple next to me
were debating whether to purchase pork chops!!! I do understand this in a way though, instead of the media getting hyper about the spread, perhaps they could spend some time letting the public know that bacon, pork and other by-products have nothing to do with this flu. Thanks again.

2. It originated in swine. But it is INFLUENZA, a respiratory virus.
Respiratory viruses are NOT foodborne.

As a veterinarian with a particular interest in public health and zoonoses, I find the endless, breathless fearmongering BY THE PRESS over this flu coming from pork beyond ridiculous. I have yet to hear a single layperson that thought it came from eating pork, but the media simply will not shut up about it.

8. Not True
If the virus hasn't been found in the pigs, it's because no one has looked yet. The existence of pig DNA in the virus strain is enough to prove that pigs are involved as part of the evolution of the disease.

In any event, you can't get flu from eating pork. It's airborne, not food borne. Until the scientists find out otherwise.
