Gingrich refers to Spanish as "the language of living in the Ghetto" on CNN
just saw on CNN about Gingrich referring to Spanish as a language of living in the Ghetto. will the Republican candidates condemn his hateful comments ?

here is an article on it :

<Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich equated bilingual education Saturday with "the language of living in a ghetto" and mocked requirements that ballots be printed in multiple languages.

"The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up" to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.

"The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. … We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto," Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100.

"Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English," he said.

Peter Zamora, co-chair of the Washington-based Hispanic Education Coalition, which supports bilingual education, said, "The tone of his comments was very hateful. Spanish is spoken by many individuals who do not live in the ghetto." >

'I don't speak Mexican' is what Gingrich meant to say.

5. CNN seems to sidestep saying plainly he meant Spanish.
Clearly, he must have been, but CNN is not being bold in saying so. Since I've known CNN to dance around things before I am hardly arguing your impression is incorrect; I'm sure your impression IS correct. I'm just noting that CNN seems shy about it (because it might embarass Gingrich to make it sound like he's singling a language out?).

That's stupid and some might find
it offensive if they didn't consider the source.

Aren't Hispanics going to be the most populated in the USA some day? I seem to remember reading that. It's only smart to be bi-lingual..something newt the newt would never understand. Hope he runs as 3rd party.

14. I believe that they believe that they are going to make us into
second class citizens, kind of like Hitler did with the Jews. If in their delusional thinking they can take the vote away from minorities like Hitler did, then I'm sure they feel they don't need our votes. Honestly, I think this is what they are thinking. Of course they haven't realized yet that no one except 21% of the voters believe them anymore.

26. That reminds me of a story from college.
Our (very odd) Spanish prof used to make the Conversational Spanish students all go to one of the stores in town and do a shopping trip. One time, a friend of mine (who now works for the Dept. of Homeland Security, which is scary) was in the class and talking with another student and trying to remember what to call something when they overheard a couple start grousing to each other about all the "illegals" in the store that day. The guy starts going off about how "those people" should all learn English or go home and starts getting nasty and then gets worse than that.

My friend went up to him and quietly told him that they were all citizens and in a Spanish class at our evangelical college and that most Spanish-speaking people in central Ohio know English very well, thank you very much. Apparently, the guy went red and left the store. :)

It's okay if you think they don't understand you or that they're not around. I'd bet Gingrich wouldn't have the cojones to say that on Latino talk radio in L.A.

30. Anyone remember "The Ugly American?"...
...Part of the stereotype was that the Ugly American showed their arrogance by coming to your country and expecting everyone to bend over backwards, to bridge the language gap created by the Ugly American who couldn't be bothered to learn your native tongue.

35. Actually, the title of the original book is ironic
In the original book, The Ugly American, the "ugly" ones are the "beautiful people," the business people and diplomats who live like royalty in a poor country, ordering the locals around and not trying to understand their culture.

The "Ugly American" of the title is a very homely man (literally "ugly") who goes and lives among the people at their standard of living and works with them to solve some of their problems.

That 1959 book was part of the inspiration for the Peace Corps.

37. Well if its "the language of living in a ghetto"
When I read the racist Gingrich's remark, I take it as him referring to the Mexican and other south of the border brown people, not the Spaniard.

With that in mind, my response to Gingrich is: Their language may be the language of living in a ghetto, but only because of the English language is the language of the forked tongued devils. I don't see any history of greedy indigenous Americans going around the world and committing rape, pillage, torture and genocide. But I see plenty of history of English speaking war mongering devils doing just that.

So Gingrich, despite what your pathetic little mind might think, your language represents a culture of barbarism and childish uncontrolled greed (like a monkey). And indigenous Americans represent a culture of ecology, cosmology and multidimensional understanding of the universe far superior than your little mind will ever be able to comprehend.

Although I do agree w/ abolishing most ESL, ELL and bilingual programs for full immersion tactics alongside w/ pullout assistance if needed. Generally bilingual programs are rather ineffective, and a huge moneymaker for publishing companies.
