I'm visiting this town until day after tomorrow, then I'm scramming back to Denver in a relatively safe place.

I have NEVER seen people so impatient. Twice tonight, there was two schmucks who ran the red lights about 10 seconds BEFORE it turned green.

Lots of double parking on the streets literally everywhere in Brooklyn, and parking SO tight you couldn't even squeeze a gnat through. Also, lots of "24 hour active driveway" that are not even being used at night. Either park it or lose it (my in-laws could use the parking spot)

Oh, and Bloomy the Schmuck decided to raise taxes on parking and meter time is 20 minutes for each quarter.

Good thing I'm heading back to my snowy Denver (at least I hope 90% is melted by Monday) where I can drive with relative ease and don't have to worry about parking - have my own driveway, and plenty of parking everywhere, even the lots downtown are relatively inexpensive compared to having to pay through the nose for downtown parking in NYC. Yeesh.

Oh yeah, Hummers and Suburbans all over Brooklyn where parking is a premium too. If I was Bloomy, I'd ban everything that is not a standard SUV.

Oh yeah, MORE friggin public transit, less cars, please. The subway was a delight to ride on between Brooklyn and Manhattan.

A-scared Hawkeye-X

Yeah, I'll fuhgettaboutit when I get back home. :)

2. Hey, I'm no tourist.
I just get scared when I go visit my in-laws in Brooklyn. Been here plenty of time, never used to the place. Give me Rochester anytime.

Well at least I'm not.

BTW, Boro park has always been a shitty place to park. That's not going to change anytime soon and if you think the subway to Manhattan was so great then you haven't done it during rush hour.

3. Seems that driving in that very scenario every day
makes them better drivers than most folks, as insane as that may sound.

But then, I used to drive in Boston quite a little bit so that may just be my perspective. Less insane, but understanding.

51. If you can drive in Boston, you can drive in the chaos of Italy.
In Eastern Mass., road rules are a suggestion that most people ignore. My first driving experience was navigating the Fresh Pond parkway rotaries with cars screeching by me at 60 mph in a 30 zone (at the time). If you can drive in Boston, you can drive anywhere.

Btw, "fuhgetaboutit" doesn't literally mean "forget about it", it's more like "she's outta here" a la Harry Kalas. Sorry to run that light, but when you drive through a thousand intersections a day those seconds add up.

17. oh please -- whining about drivers in Brooklyn?
That's the kiddie ride version -- try Manhattan at rush hour. You'll appreciate all those Brooklyn drivers with just one day's worth of lower Manhattan.

Next time fly in to NY and cab it - or do as the peons do and take the subway. Personally, I loved driving in Brooklyn when I lived there. You learn the parking patterns and how to play them. Or you give up your car.

24. Johnny Carson NY story
So, Johnny Carson was riding in a cab and they came to a red light. There was a blind man with a seeing-eye dog crossing the street.

The light turns green, but the blind man still hadn't cleared the intersection. So the cab driver leans on his horn as soon as the light turns green.

Johnny asks him, "Why did you honk at him? He's blind. He didn't know the light had changed"

The cab driver replies, "Well, the dog should have known better"

The fact you can stroll around any part of NYC at any time of night and be safe is comforting too. And if you don't
have a date, some locals will come up to you and ask you if you want one.

A better bedroom community does not exist.

45. I can tell you this
After living here in NY for about a year or so, going back to the Pacific Northwest really made me notice the contrast in driving. Being on the Interstate was like being on a kiddie ride at the Playland!

They are really aggressive around here, I'm still too intimidated to drive in NYC. But I can flip folks off like the best of them on the Thruway!

53. I have no prob. negotiating NYC traffic.. even with a big
old suburban old lady van..

Here's the trick:
You pay attention to the car directly in front of you, and the cars directly on either side..And you let the guy behind you worry about YOU.

Also.. think of the traffic on the Avenues as water.. The lanes are of no significance.. you should just take the path of least resistance...
