Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 11:10 PM by catnhatnh
Edited to Add: Back in the early 90's a fellow named Alan Kulwicki took the championship for Ford as an owner/driver during the early period of multi-car teams. Towards the end of the season, with the permission of Ford the took the "Th" off his vehicle and actually raced the car as the "underbird". He won for the season in the last race when he received extra points by leading the most laps by staying on track while risking running out of gas. He lost the race but won the championship by smart driving. This redneck was the pride of Wisconsin...

36. Fuel economy is actually more important in a lot of racing than you might imagine..
Pit stops for fuel take time, the further you can go on a given amount of fuel, the fewer pit stops you have to make.

NASCAR engines are surprisingly efficient, they get around 5 mpg or maybe even a bit better at well over 150 mph. In fact the BMEP of a NASCAR engine is within a single percentage point of F1 engines, the most highly developed racing engines on the planet.

I'm by no means a NASCAR fan, I'd rather watch superbike road racing if it's a motorized event, that's like ballet at 180 mph.

40. They had those a few years ago.
The biodiesel cars kicked the shit out of all comers. The mpg was just a part of it, greenhouse gas and well to wheel pollution were also taken int account. That doesn't even include counting how many people die in mideast wars. I remember it as being nesea.org who sponsored the races here in the northeast, but their website had no mention that I could see.

16. Those who've been paying attention would realize
that NASCAR is already having financial trouble. Many of their sponsors have either pulled out entirely or significantly cut their support. The fans are unable to travel to the different racing venues for the weekends. The money spent in those communities isn't there anymore.

I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I've been following this with interest. I'm also seeing a real impact on professional football and baseball, if the news reports I've been reading recently are any indication.

46. At least the F1 cars use current technology.
Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 10:35 PM by obiwan
The current NASCAR chassis "design" traces its roots back to 1965. All the cars are the same under the skin except for the engines and sheet metal.

It's no secret that the teams hate the "Car Of Tomorrow." Putting a wing on a 40 year old design does not a good race car make.

Goodyear makes a shitty tire which basically hasn't changed much since they introduced radials to NASCAR. This is the only make of tire in this series. The teams all underinflate them to corner faster, and the tires heat up and fail. Consistently. They also cut rather easily, probably because of the underinflation. Tire failure is the most common cause of car retirement, not mechanical failure. NASCAR Sprint Cup is the only high-profile series worldwide where Goodyear is the pre-eminent tire. In fact they are the ONLY tire.

Boring! A war of attrition that masquerades as a motor race.

Primitive and senseless! Technical innovation and good preparation (the reason certain teams win more races in other series) are stifled .

It's a crapshoot and the cars and drivers are little more than rolling billboards.

I don't waste my time on NASCAR. That ain't racing.

58. Teams hate the "COT" like bad golfers hate deep rough.
Race. Race with what we give you to race, just race. Stop whining, and race. Race. That's what NASCAR drivers do. They race with what they're given.

War of attrition? Um, how many cars finish as a percentage in NASCAR as compared to F1 or any other racing series you can think of? How many cars WRECK during the course of the race and still finish? Finish due to the hard work of their pit crews? How many F1 drivers' day ends because they wound up in a SAND PIT?

Lock up your brakes in a formula car and wind up in the sand pit? End of your day. Pussies. Hit a wall at 150+ and fix your car, finish the race... Race Car Driver.

One last thing, keep your electric blankie on the bed where it belongs. Race your car out of the pits on cold tires like a real race car driver would. Learn to use a clutch like real drivers do. Grab second gear out of the pits by using an actual gear shift like everyone else in the fucking world who drives a regular car would.

39. Awwww...did I strike a nerve?
What part of "team" don't you get?

Yeah, real racing...you know, corners and whatnot. Racing that transcends into real world improvements for cars sold to the public? Unlike NASCAR which is little more than pro-wrestling identification with a racing "icon" coupled with idiots who only watch hockey for the fights (crashes to the "only left turns, please" crowd).

That enough words for you, princess?

56. What part of RACING don't YOU get?
43 cars start EACH NASCAR race, most finish, and EVERY driver drives his car to win. EVERY DRIVER. NO ONE in NASCAR is told before the race to go out and get behind his teammate and block the other cars. I dare you to find one instance of that in NASCAR. MANY times, teammates in NASCAR have caused a crash on the last lap by racing with their team brothers because of their will to win, and team orders are never mentioned. That happens a lot in F1, no? No.

Your post goes to show what you DON'T know about NASCAR. It's not just about going fast, and it's not just about turning left. It's about getting from Point A to Point B before the other cars. Do you get that? It's about covering a set distance before your competitors. It's about teamwork AND endurance. How many F1 races cover a 500 mile distance? How many of the oh-so-technologically-advanced F1 engines could even FINISH a flat-out 500 mile race? Beuller? Beuller? At super-speedways like Daytona, drivers try to push the gas pedal through the floor all the way around the track. No lifting. How many F1 races stop after a predetermined TIME, without covering the set distance? Lots. I want to see two cars cross the finish line while drag racing from the last turn. I want to see them jostling for position all the way down the front straight. Bang some fenders at 200 miles per hour. That happens A LOT in F1, no? No. That's what racing is about. A huge majority of NASCAR drivers finish on the lead lap in a Cup race. That happens a lot in F1, no? No.

Mario Andretti won the world driving championship in F1, and gee, where did he get the bulk of his racing experience before that? Crickets... How many F1 drivers have won the Daytona 500? Beuller? Beuller?

F1 heroes sometimes enter a turn too hard, lock up their brakes (even though their cars are on warm tires that just emerged from their electric blankies), and end up in a sand pit. A fucking sand pit for Gawd's sake. End of their day. Pick up the car with a crane, and put it behind the wall. NASCAR drivers smack the WALL at 150+ mph, and their pit crews take the car to the garage, fix it, and put it back on the track before the race is over. That happens a lot in F1, no? No. Touch a wheel with another car, and your day is over. Happens a lot in NASCAR races, no? No.

I'd venture a guess that not many NASCAR fans are hockey fans. OFFSIDES! Stop the game. THE WHOLE FUCKING GAME. THREE LINE PASS! Stop the game. THE WHOLE FUCKING GAME. ICING THE PUCK! WTF? They play the whole fucking GAME on ice. Whatever, stop the game. THE WHOLE FUCKING GAME. Bitchin' fun, lemme tell ya. Fights? We NASCAR fans don't need no stinking fights. Pro wrestling is fake and decided beforehand ala the "team orders" of F1. NOT what the average NASCAR fan would cheer.

What sets NASCAR apart from the open wheel racing you think is the apex of the sport? Oh, let me see: Clutch pedals, gearshifts, lugnuts, windshields, gasoline, and the fact that the driver sits to the left side of the driveshaft of his front-engine car. Um, that makes the NASCAR driver much like me. Much like you as well. On second thought, maybe not. I bet you've never turned a wrench in your life. I drive a car that has a clutch pedal, a gearshift, lugnuts, a windshield, runs on gasoline, and I sit on the left side of the driveshaft of my front-engine car. In my driving life, I've saved tens of thousands of dollars by fixing my car all by myself. Therein lies the attraction of NASCAR. The drivers are just regular guys. Guys who could probably fix a car that has a clutch pedal, a gearshift, lugnuts, a windshield, runs on gas, and has a driveshaft that runs down the center of their front-engine car. Guys like me. Guys who've had to scrape grease from underneath their fingernails after fixing their own car. NOT prima-donnas who've never picked up a wrench in their fucking life. Oh, and where do most F1 guys get their initial driving experience? Go-Karts. Go-fucking-Karts. Go-Karts with bars that keep the tires of one kart from touching the tires of another kart. Don't tell me I'm wrong about that, I went to the Long Beach Grand Prix many times when it was still an F1 event. The sound of the Go-Karts that raced the circuit before the "big boys" took to the track was like listening to a beehive with a stethoscope. Oh wait, that's how a F1 race sounds also. Too funny.

Princess? Oh, but you do flatter me. I'm a regular guy who grew up fixing his own car from the age of 16. I'd gladly trade my dirty fingernails for a life of palm fronds and grapes.

With apologies to Budweiser: "This one's for you"... I just wanted to make you warm and fuzzy with your usual response to posts here.

In the (modern) scheme of things, the Camry is an American stock car.

It's built in Marysville, Ohio and other U.S. cities. Has been for years. It's also the #1 selling American-made car.

Go Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Scott Speed, Brian Vickers, Marcus Ambrose, et al!

If only rednecks followed NASCAR, I wouldn't be posting this. I'm a smart aleck, but I am no redneck.

I watch NASCAR when there is no other racing on TV.
