I have been working at my job almost as long as Obama has at his.
I am a programmer/business analyst/data base designer.
One of the things they want me to do is re-write all of their existing web applications in .net 2.0, they are currently in classic asp.
There is no real documentation of all the lines of code. Some features never got implemented, there are a lot tools they want me to build that are all new, and some of the old code goes errors out.
For now we are continuing business as usual, I have one new app I am going to Demo Monday, but even it is not completed as my analysis of their requirements has raised some issues. It is not perfect but will help us with a big project we are on.
I had to jump in and fix a few problems with the old code a week ago, and my third day on the job I did the same. I couldn't just make everything all new in this time frame.
So for me it has been - keep using what we have, business as usual, while each day I work with others to make the needed changes. Everyone is happy I am there, excited about all the new changes I am working on, but since several of them have been or are coders/db folks themselves they understand that it takes a long time to get it all right (and to speed this new app along I cut some corners but will fix them in my spare time, we need this one up asap).
I don't like some of where Obama is going, what he saying, or what he is doing. But I do understand it is going to be awhile before real change can materialize.
At least with him as President I have a hope I didn't have with bush.
And with DU (I always remember the U and what it means) I am confident we will be good project managers and stay on top of his progress, and the people will make sure they do as well.
Criticize where needed, push for change, but don't lose hope and keep in mind even changing ONE thing like health care is an enormous project - and he is under a lot more stress than I am as his work affects the lives of a lot of us fellow humans.
He is on a team, and we all are a part of that team and must keep working together to reach where we want to be. While we cannot affect direct change of policy, we can help guide it by our voices, emails, votes, etc.
He works for us (as do the rest of people in government) and while I may not be happy with all of his performance to date I sure as hell don't want to fire him :)
