Why would the drug cartels want to risk bringing the full weight of the United States to bear on them? The drug cartels are about one thing, and one thing only - making MONEY. Committing violence against your rivals and potential witnesses is one thing. It would be sheer suicide on their part to perpetrate a major terrorist attack on US soil. This isn't some third-world country that they can expect to coerce into submission. They know that any major attack on US soil would bring about swift and brutal retaliation, regardless of who is in power at the time. It would seriously hamper their business, possibly even destroy their cartels.

So the cartels who make billions upon billions of dollars would risk an open attack on the US.

Do you remember the weeks after 9/11? Think back. No political discourse, no fighting in Congress, just swift (and in some instances unwarranted) action.

Bombs would be falling over Mexico blasting cartel warehouses, houses, drug labs into pieces within a few days.

Cartel bosses would see their net worth evaporate at a rate of millions per hour. Everything they built up over the last 2 decades would be gone within a week.
