A MONSTROUS WAR CRIME
A monstrous war crime

With more than 650,000 civilians dead in Iraq, our government must take responsibility for its lies

Richard Horton
Wednesday March 28, 2007
The Guardian

Our collective failure has been to take our political leaders at their word. This week the BBC reported that the government's own scientists advised ministers that the Johns Hopkins study on Iraq civilian mortality was accurate and reliable, following a freedom of information request by the reporter Owen Bennett-Jones. This paper was published in the Lancet last October. It estimated that 650,000 Iraqi civilians had died since the American and British led invasion in March 2003.

<snip>

At a time when we are celebrating our enlightened abolition of slavery 200 years ago, we are continuing to commit one of the worst international abuses of human rights of the past half-century. It is inexplicable how we allowed this to happen. It is inexplicable why we are not demanding this government's mass resignation.

Two hundred years from now, the Iraq war will be mourned as the moment when Britain violated its delicate democratic constitution and joined the ranks of nations that use extreme pre-emptive killing as a tactic of foreign policy. Some anniversary that will be.

· Richard Horton is a doctor and the editor of the Lancet

7. That's not enough
The UK government does not dispute the figures. They have confirmed them in fact.

Who are these "people" and how well informed are they?

Election? Well, whatever, but that's not the issue at all. The issue is WAR CRIMES.

We are speaking about justice and mass slaughter. We're not talking about tinny public opinion polls or plastic political rhetoric.

Children are dying by the thousands. American '08 elections are too late for these souls. It's not okay.

8. K&R
The evil of Kissinger, Cheney, Rummy, Wolfie, Perle, and all the other bloody criminals that hide in the shadows, should be written about and broadcasted. For centuries.

But because their bloodlust was unleashed on olive-skinned peoples, it probably won't.

The Masters of War go unchecked, smiling and slapping each other on the back.

I got this feeling tonight . . . they're really going to let Iran have it. Here in a couple weeks. Full bore. B-1's and B-52's for days on end. Because they can. Simply because they can.

I'm now going to get really stoned. Maybe the feeling will go away.

Surely, someone with some sense will talk them out of it.

Right.

15. With a population of around 28 million, that is about 1 in every 42 Iraqis.
Edited on Wed Mar-28-07 11:18 PM by Rex
Over a four year time-frame. Four more years and it will be 1 in every 20. Maybe even more.

My small town is pop 3000. So it would be about 72 people killed here from war.
