1. My understanding is many of those who watch the Olympics want their own country to win.
Even those who watch gymnastics.

2. I agree. Gymnasts are the most inspiring athletes, IMO. I remember making a post here about ho
how Kim Zmeskal was the greatest athlete I've ever seen.

10. Little teensy girls that starve themselves to hold off puberty.
I wish they did it in weight classes, so you could see adults with adult bodies do it. Look at some of those women in the WNBA and you know they could do the uneven bars great, or whatever.

It's a sport that's 'judged' so it's really culturally bound.

12. extremely doubtful
i am a competitive strength athlete, fwiw.

one of the reasons gymnast tend to be short is because of the advantages of a lower center of gravity.

there are also issues with strength/weight ratios.

while the WNBA athletes do have a great complement of fast twitch (probably some elite type IIx/Type I ratios for instance), on the whole they would not be ideally suited for gymnastics.

there have been some (relatively) taller willowy athletes in female gymnastics, don't get me wrong.

6. I think figure skating fans are in the same league.
They just want to see the skaters put in a great performance.

9. Aux contraire.
I'm getting the impression that there are very few parents here who have taken their children to gymnastic or ice skating lessons.

I have. And the parents can be brutal. I mean really brutal.

They can be so demanding of their kids, that it brought tears to my eyes many times.

More often than not, it's the parents who are fiercely competitive, not the kids. The kids just want to have fun.
