Well, the GOP mess finally got me - I lost my legal asst job here in Miami , FL
(sigh)

I'm so sad and so frustrated that we allowed the GOP to hurt our country for so long. How could this have happened to our country?

I'm looking around desperately for a job in my field, but even attorneys are applying for legal assistant/secretary/paralegal jobs here in Miami. It's so bad. I think I need a beer.

Anyway, wish me luck! Send me a hug. And if you hear of anything, you know where I am.

17. No, I think it's very important for us to tell each other what is happening.
That's the only way I can see for us to deal with it.

You may be in a good position to tap the non-profit job market. You let us know how you do. :hi:

18. What a difference 15 years makes, huh?
I was a trial paralegal in Washington DC during the 90's. I would go on job interviews (after I had a few years experience) and get offers on the spot. And turn them down because they weren't high enough. When I left in 2000 my salary was six figures with my o/t, and I cashed in my decent investment account & headed to grad school.

I can't imagine what it's like now. I'm so sorry you lost your spot. I've been watching law.com and it's very frightening.

I was a legal secretary, then a court stenographer for twenty yrs, and I have a BA in Biology and a J.D.

I looked for a legal assistant job back in 2005-2006 and got a grand total of one interview in about two yrs of looking. And I used my law school's job search office to help me. Didn't do any good.

28. I've been wondering how the legal profession was faring
across the country and if it would be affected. What have been the main issues? They did a spot on the news the other day that divorcing couples are having live together because they can't afford to divorce until house prices go back up. What about car accident claims and medical malpractice and things like that? What is taking the biggest hit.

Sorry for the 64,000 questions. It's just an industry I don't deal with much. Here is to hoping you find something quickly and what you want and pays a bundle.

30. No it's okay for the questions :) Well, what I've seen happening is that...

1) Clients are no longer paying as quickly as they used to, or paying at all
2) Any firm that was remotely associated with real estate, construction, banks, loans, the construction boom, home sales, etc. is almost finished. Real estate departments are dead except for foreclosures.
3) Bankruptcy is doing okay but not as good as foreclosures
4) As companies die out and people go out of business, law firms have less business

LOTS of layoffs, LOTS! Some stealth layoffs, some en masse.

It's not good.

36. Big firms here
Are making big administrative changes. Some are getting rid of secretarial floater pools. Legal assistants are doubling and tripling assignments. Secretaries are getting assigned as many as four attorneys. Some firms are doing away with the classic secretarial position altogether and going to big typist pools and structuring one assistant for several attorneys more like a traffic cop for directing work to efficient, specialty service groups. "Luxury" IT jobs are vanishing and marketing budgets are being reduced. One of the big firms here laid off 16 people earlier this week (some attorneys included). That's pretty unheard of.

Raises were nothing and benefits are beginning to be reduced at my firm. So far no layoffs but early retirement packages were offered and many accepted them. The attrition is not being replaced.

37. My daughter who is a lawyer in LA, now at a mid-size firm,
Edited on Wed Mar-04-09 11:00 PM by Blue_In_AK
says the larger firms are laying off up to 90 lawyers and 250 staff people, or approximately 10% of their employees. She's feeling fortunate that she downsized to a smaller, more manageable sized law firm last summer. I don't know what all those associates are going to do with their (no doubt) very large student loans.

And good luck, Sarah. In some respects you'll probably have an easier time finding work than the lawyers will.

55. Have you thought about doing court transcription?
Edited on Wed Mar-04-09 11:59 PM by Blue_In_AK
I was a legal secretary/paralegal for 25 years here, but I left the biz in 2001 when our firm downsized (because all my favorite people were leaving), and started typing transcripts at home. Here in Alaska all the court proceedings are recorded on four-track CDs, and then we transcriptionists have the playback program that works just like a dictation tape would, with headphones and a foot pedal so you can start and stop as you type.

I subcontract with a woman who has contracts with the state and federal court system. She's very busy, and I have work almost all the time -- transcribing trials for appeal records, motion hearings, all kinds of things. It's interesting, plus I can set my own pace -- I tell her how much I want to type, and she downloads me the sound files off the CD that she picked up from the court or attorney. I don't even have to do any of the production -- just type and get paid by the page. I can do it in my bathrobe. :)

Anyway, it's just a thought. There's some security in being your own boss.

68. They did this to get rid of the trained court reporters.
What do you do when a person mumbles?? You can't get a usable transcript if somebody mumbles.
The court reporter has to interrupt the person and tell them to speak up and repeat things. I did it constantly. The court reporter also has to interrupt when the lawyer and witness run over each other's words.

And who CERTIFIES the transcript? That they were there and that it is complete AND accurate?

You're not gonna get that with a person running a tape recorder. Tape recorders do NOT hear the same way people do and they cannot clarify the record.

A defendant's life hangs in the balance, but HEY, we can't afford a REAL court reporter.

77. I'm afraid I don't agree with you.
Edited on Thu Mar-05-09 03:15 PM by Blue_In_AK
Our in-court clerks are very good about making sure that the recording is clear, they monitor it continually, and if someone isn't coming through they are not shy about stopping the proceeding and getting it clarified. The recording is on four channels, a microphone for the judge, one for each attorney, and one in the witness box, so we are able to isolate out each channel when people are talking over one another. The transcript is certified by the transcriptionist, i.e., me, and I will swear by my work. Like I said I've been doing this full time since 2001, and before then I was doing it as a second job, and I have never had a complaint by either side about the quality of my work.

I type the transcript, then I go back and listen to the whole thing again to make sure I got it right. That's one thing you can't do if you're an in-court reporter.

And I also know of stenographers, the "real" court reporters, as you want to call them, who couldn't get a transcript scoped right if their life depended on it.

84. I didn't operate that way.
I made DAMN SURE that every word was as close to perfect, and every sentence as close to perfect, as was humanly possible.

In fact, I once took a deposition where the attorney did not speak in complete sentences. I refused to change the transcript to make the attorney look good. My boss FIRED ME for making an accurate transcript. So much for doing a superlative job.

I am stil wondering what sort of certification you have to go through? Does the state make you pass a test, and make you get a bond, so you can sign and seal documents, like a Notary?

I have been a C.S.R. and a Notary Public both. Actually, if the clerk is REPLACING the court reporter, then the clerk would have to go over the transcript and swear that it matched what they heard in court. Since you weren't there in person, I wonder what the wording is on the certificate.

90. Yes, I did pass a test and post a bond.
Edited on Thu Mar-05-09 04:51 PM by Blue_In_AK
Our certification says this:

TRANSCRIBER’S CERTIFICATE
I, **, hereby certify that the foregoing pages numbered 2 through * are a true, accurate, and complete transcript of proceedings in Case No. ****, transcribed by me from a copy of the electronic sound recording to the best of my knowledge and ability.

______________________ _____________________________
Date ***, Transcriber

As I said, I voice check the entire transcript (I usually do this after I've typed about 40 pages or so, so I don't get fatigued before proceeding), then it's spot checked again by the woman I subcontract with, who does the production end of it (as well as a lot of typing herself), and then finally it's spot-checked again by clerks in the transcript department at the court, who are very, very picky. And, of course, the attorneys have the final say -- if something doesn't sound right to them, we go back and listen again, but I've never had any issue with an attorney.

I agree that the old tapes, even though four-track, were sometimes not the best, but with the new digital recordings, they couldn't be any clearer. And, of course, it helps that I've been doing legal work for 34 years and know the "terms of art." Just as there are no doubt skilled and less skilled stenographers, there are skilled and less skilled transcriptionists. Not to brag, but our team is very skilled.

We have the same issue as you do when people talk about sending these CDs out to "transcription factories" in the Lower 48, who know nothing about our court system, or more especially how to spell Alaska place names -- Kikmiktalikamiut, Arovirchagk, Chuathbaluk, to name a few.

Anyway, I know this a longstanding fight, and I do see your point of view. Maybe there's room in the world for all of us. :pals:

78. I'm in LA, too, at a small boutique entertainment law firm.
Our offices are in the twin towers in Century City, and we've been hearing lots of elevator chatter about who's getting hit with layoffs. The most recent big firms to do mass attorney layoffs were Latham & Watkins and Cox Castle.

We're in pretty good shape so far, but if the actors strike (which then hits our clients directly, and hard), we will be well and truly fucked.

They're across the street from us in a different office complex (as you probably know, Century City and downtown are the two clusters for law firms).

I feel awful for everybody being let go, and I'm EXTREMELY grateful for my job (not just that I have one, but that I work for a truly wonderful bunch of people). Scary stuff.

I believe the cut is 10% of their employees. It's a very, very sad thing, and if those young associates have student loans anything like my daughter's, it will be a real crisis for them.

I do understand. My husband lost his 8 year hardware salesman job last week. And they love him. They had to cut a 1/3 of the workforce. My thoughts are with you and him that you will both find a better new job. Think of me too, please? I work for a school district 4 million in the hole...! Hopefully, my seniority will carry me better for the next school year than it did in 2004! Remember, we're all in this hole together and together, we'll climb the hell back out! We are Americans and I'm still really proud of that fact in spite of the last 8 years of hell. I never did like my husband's employer of the past 8 years so it's kind of funny that we got rid of BUSH (hahahaha I am *saying* BUSH instead of *!) and my husband's icky job almost at the same time! I guess if we look hard enough, we'll find a rainbow somewhere? Good luck and keep us posted, please!

47. Patchuli, I'm so sorry. And thank you for sharing that with me!
I will send you blessings and hope that both you and your hubby climb up to a very comfy position soon. I have lots of hope that eventually we'll all climb out of this nasty hole the Repukes have put us all in. Let this be a lesson to us that we cannot afford to let this happen again.

74. You are right about that!
Everytime Rethugs get control, they completely f*ck everything up. The Boyking did an incredible job of turning everything he touched to shit! Hey, he took down a company, a baseball team, a state and now a country. Let's hope the pain dealt U.S. by the Bush clan will ensure that never ever will another one 'grace' our White House! NO JEB!!!!

Hang in there, friend! We will get through this! :fistbump:

61. Yeah, its bad in all professions. Hang in there.
I am angry too. She is only 29 and she and her husband have no kids and he has a good job still. But I know tons of people that have lost jobs already and that has never happened before, a lot of people in their twenties and thirties. Its effecting younger and older workers. Hopefully it will turn around at some point.

I don't know anyone down in Miami these days in the legal profession. On the other hand, if you have a straight truck with a freezer or a reefer unit (NOT THAT KIND OF REEFER), I know someone who might be able to help you out.

Good luck.

59. I am so sorry!
While not in your situation (knocking on wood), my partner comes home today and announces his company is laying of 4% of its entire workforce, the process has already started! I have been 'unemployed' for over 6 years. His company pays for my insurance. I am trying not to get too upset, but both of us will start re-tooling our resumes. I pray this will pass us over and feel for those who are about to get the "pink slip."

On your front, I know someone with contacts in the legal world and Miami. I will see if the two paths cross, should I hear of anything, I will let you know immediately!!! I wish you the best!

One just wouldn't believe the horror stories that come through my practice. No one has any money. even if they have a job.

If it wasn't for the free work I do I would be sitting at home most of the time. Even the "rich" are so bust they aren't getting their teeth done.

Best of luck to you.

76. Bummer!
I worked for the Miami Herald for 17 years and decided to take early retirement in 2005 at age of 55 because I felt things were going to get worse. Got approval quickly for SSDI (I am totally deaf, but I had been working for 36 years.) Got pension from the Miami Herald, move to Arkansas. Recently I got a letter from the Miami Herald ... they are freezing pensions, but no change for those who are already receiving pensions so I got lucky. My car insurance went from $1,600 per year to $700 per year when I moved from Miami to Arkansas. Living here in Arkansas is much cheaper than South Florida. I lived in Homestead/Florida City. I still miss it there. Even my house insurance went from normally $379 per year to over $2,000 because of those hurricanes. I couldn't live on present income if I stayed, wouldn't be able to retire.

I still can't imagine how Americans allowed GOP to destroy America for 8 years! x(

I hope you find something better. My sister lost her job as paralegal secretary in Ohio last December. She is still looking! :(
