Elder's Meditation of the Day - March 1
Elder's Meditation of the Day - March 1

"The beginning is purification, that's the first step..And purification means purification of body and mind. You don't purify the body without cleansing the mind; that's the way it works."
--Rolling Thunder, CHEROKEE

If we have bad thoughts or poison in our minds, they will eventually show up in our bodies in the form of headaches, pains, and stomach problems. It works this way because we are interconnected. Our minds and our bodies are one system. So when we start to grow, or commit to the Red Road, we need to start cleaning up our thoughts and start showing respect for our bodies. We start purifying our minds by prayer and meditation, and we start cleansing our bodies by getting the right amount of sleep and developing good eating habits. Today, I'm going to observe my thoughts. Will my thoughts be clean today?

Great Spirit, let me focus on Your love today so my mind will be pure.

4. Very good.
Thank you for posting this. I think that it is something that benefits us as individuals, and also should help us recognize that on the larger level, our society needs a purification.

Nominated.

6. I believe Obama is leading us in that direction
in his attempt to change how we look at issues. He is reminding us of our common values, and looking to our common goals--that's what's important, not the personalities or politics that surround issues. He is also stressing getting along by looking for the best in others--acknowledging where they are but also showing where they can go, given a little Light.

12. Wise words, H2O Man...
Our society, as a whole, *could* use a good purification. However, it's up to each individual to work on themselves, with the ultimate goal of creating a more peaceful society...

Peace to you and yours,

Ghost

5. Purification
I have appreciated and supported those walking the Red Road, and understand how important the aspect of mental purification is. I think it is one reason preparation for rituals such as the sweat lodge or vision quest or sundance are so very important. While you are helping tie the hundreds of tobacco ties that will surround a person while they are out on the hill for vision quest, your mind quiets and focuses on the task at hand. You feel the connection with the one who is going out on the hill as you do this and as you join them in the lodge for the sweat that starts before they go out and ends only when they return. In the traditions in which I have participated, it is the only lodge where the door cannot be opened between rounds, and these sweats are amongst the most intense physically, emotionally, and mentally, in which I have participated.

13. Wow, thanks for your input on this, ayeshahaqqiqa
My girlfriend participated in a sweatlodge ceremony before. If memory serves correctly, it was with the Blackfeet Tribe. She said the same thing about them being very intense, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Peace to you and yours,

Ghost

14. Sounds like a winner, doesn't it?
I've been reading up on sweatlodge ceremonies and it sounds like something I'd like to try at least once in my lifetime...

Peace to you and yours, NightWatcher

15. I highly recommend them.
I help a guy facilitate sweats a couple of times a week.
We don't do a Native American style sweat, though. It is more a hybrid hippy/hindu thing my friend came up with.
I was skeptical at first but I have seen it help bring about profound changes in many of the attendees lives and outlook on life.

I also do a sweat or two each week that are more swedish sauna then ceremony sweats. As far as I am concerned a regular suana is almost just as good.Certainly, from a physical standpoint its no different. And even the mental cleansing could be done in such a way if one were so inclined.

Either way they both get my endorsement.
