Wal-Mart Cuts Jobs

BENTONVILLE -- Hundreds of Wal-Mart and Sam's Club corporate office workers lost their jobs Tuesday as the world's largest retailer restructures to cut costs in a dismal economy.

"We expect the changes to impact approximately 700-800 Home Office positions including merchandising, real estate, marketing and support divisions in Wal-Mart U.S., Sam's Club merchandising and some corporate functions," said Mike Duke, Wal-Mart president and CEO, in a memo distributed to employees and the media early Tuesday afternoon.

Those who lost their jobs included marketers and buyers in the pharmacy, optical and medical clinics division, which are consolidating into one division of health and wellness, said Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar. The health and wellness consolidation is resulting in job losses that are included in the overall total, though Tovar did not provide specific numbers or wage ranges.

4. I don't give a dman about Wal-Mart BUT
this is very bad news for the Northwest Arkansas area.

It is an area populated with 2 large businesses (Wal-Mart and Tyson), lots of small business, some family agriculture, and some manufacturing. Not much else. The transformation there from a pure agricultural economy was the result of the growth of the two large corporations. The economy there is very dependent upon these large corporations. Most of the old-timers there resent Wal-Mart and its business model. Small business and agriculture there has been struggling for some time. Manufacturing has already seen substantial layoffs there. And ther have already been some bank failures there. Lots of folks there who don't - and wouldn't - work for Wal-Mart are going to be badly hurt.

6. And they're going about it with typical wallyworld class, too
Telling people report to the auditorium for "a meeting" and then firing the poor sods when they get there, having them escorted to the door without even a chance to go back to their offices and get their things.

Style. Real style.

Just what you'd expect from these weasels.

disgustedly,
Bright
