Henrietta Hughes given a house!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/11/henrietta-hughes-given-ho_n_166028.html

If you were paying attention to Obama's stimulus push yesterday it was hard to miss Henrietta Hughes, a woman on the verge of tears who asked the President to help her with an "urgent need": homelessness. After the Florida town hall where Hughes talked to Obama, a local Fort Myers paper says she was offered a home by State Representative Nick Thompson's wife.

Read more from the paper below and here. And watch the exchange between Hughes and Obama below the excerpt.

Henrietta Hughes was offered a home by Chene Thompson, wife of State Representative Nick Thompson, who heard the homeless woman's pleas for help to President Obama before a local and national crowd.

The house is in LaBelle, the first home Scere Thompson bought after law school. She told Hughes, "Just give me the opportunity to help you."

3. "offered a home" doesnt mean she gets a free house.
Either way, glad she's off the street. 1 down ...

8. And she doesn't need a free house. But she needs an address
for employment (or her son's employment) and to vote, which she couldn't do because of her homelessness last November. She'll have dignified shelter until they get on their feet again. It was a generous offer by the Representative.

4. offered house by wife of Republican State Senator Nick Thompson.
Would have been even nicer if it was by a Democratic politician. Hope it works out.

5. True but its usually the Republicans with houses to spare ...
... Dems tend to be a little more practical. ;-)

6. That bit of feel-good fluff will certainly reduce the SHAMEFUL homelessness rate of the U.S.

7. You know what, bobbolink?
I realize it's a drop in the bucket of homelessness across this country, but why can't you even be thankful that two more people are off the streets?

The publicity surrounding Ms. Hughes will hopefully shed even more light on homelessness, including the fact that the waiting period for Section 8 housing in her area is TWO YEARS. More light = more help.

Would you want people to be happy for you?

9. Why? Do you really want me to have to tell you? You can't figure it out????
"The publicity surrounding Ms. Hughes will hopefully shed even more light on homelessness, including the fact that the waiting period for Section 8 housing in her area is TWO YEARS. More light = more help."

Ah, yes... it's all about "HOPE".

If we just have enough "HOPE" everything will be hunky-dory, won't it?

NEVER MIND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DYING ON THE STREETS IN THE MEANTIME.

"Would you want people to be happy for you?"

LISTEN up.... I want you to GET this.

NO.... I wouldn't have even PHRASED my "question" to Obama in that way. It ISN"T all about *ME*---it's about the MILLIONS who are also homeless!

You really think I'm selfish enough to be happy that I got some place to live (until the limelight fades, and they kick them out!!) while MILLIONS are still out on the street???? NOPE... I have a bit more awareness of the suffering of others.

18. Better go down to the local city hall and demand your vote back
Obviously Obama HAS done nothing TOWARDS helping ALL homeless PEOPLE in ONE fell swoop.

10. Oddly enough, I searched the Hendry County public records, and
I found no property owned by any of these Thompsons (Nick, Nicholas, Chene or Scere). Maybe they have the chance to obtain this property at which point they'll transfer ownership to her. I'm hoping it's not a lie or a scam, and she does get a place to live.

Labelle is in Hendry County, Florida, and the search was effective Monday.

12. It could be owned as an LLC, it could be a family trust, it could be an estate
it could be a lot of things that don't necessarily involve their last names.

14. I thought of that.
Just struck me as odd as the article makes it seem as if its been in "the family name" forever.

20. I've repeated it over and over and over and over..... ASKED for calls supporting it,
are you really not understanding the issue and what needs to be done, or is this just another "Put her on the spot and try to make her squirm" ploy?

24. Really? You haven't seen our many posts and essays about LOW-INCOME HOUSING????
Remember when I posted many times about the National Housing Trust Fund? Remember? Asking people to please write and call about that???

Here, how 'bout all of you, rather than trashing me, and trying to put me in the hot seat, and saying that giving ONE FAMILY a home is WONDERFUL, actually do the reading and finding out for yourself. Maybe that would get through...

http://www.nlihc.org/template/index.cfm

And, here's a great way to DO something for homelessness, instead of clapping for a publicity stunt, and snickering at the rest of us who are trying to get some understanding of this issue:

NLIHC will be hosting a viewing of Trouble the Water on April 19, 2009 at The Capitol Hilton in Washington, DC

YOU could take some action, and LOBBY for REAL HOUSING, rather than another publicity stunt.

I wasn't doing any of that, so back the hell down, OK?
If you disagree, SHOW ME where I did that!!

WTF?!?!?

I asked you a simple, straight forward question,
that's ALL.

" What is your solution?"

You went off the fucking deep end accusing me of everything short of character assassination!

Don't accuse me of things I haven't done.

You'll communicate much better if you stop attacking me.

Thanks for the link,

that's the answer I was looking for.

26. When I keep repeating the same stuff to the same people, it gets very old.
When poverty finally becomes a PRIORITY for "progressives", then there won't be the ignorance, and the incessant repeating.

If other minorities had to go through this same stuff, they'd get plenty po'd, too!!

so do forgetful ones.

btw, " other minorities" do go through that same stuff.

Just ask my son.
