Photo of Michael Phelps smoking pot? He says it's him
TAMPA, Fla. -- Olympic great Michael Phelps has acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper showed him smoking marijuana.

News of the World, a British tabloid, posted a picture with an accompanying story today that the publication says shows the 14-time Olympic gold medalist taking a hit from a bong at a college party at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. The article's headline: WHAT A DOPE.

The article said that the photo was taken last November during a visit by Phelps to the campus to visit a girl he had been seeing. It also said that Phelps, described as "loud" and "obnoxious" by students, spent much of his time there partying.

The story also said the Phelps' representatives "went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture."

In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture.

Phelps said: "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

7. Time to leagalize marijuana. Its insanity that keep that dead-ended law
in place.. At least classify the drug in a diff. category so that it is not an illegal narcotic to be caught with. Pot is not a narcotic by most people's standards. Its certainly nothing like crack, meth, extasy, or heroin.

but knowing that marijuana isn't addictive, doesn't make people aggressive (it makes them chill to the extreme), and is innocent compared to tobacco, I don't see why this is considered "illegal".

even elderly with glaucoma or cataracts (not sure which one it helps with), is something that most people in America recognize. If your mom's fighting breast cancer, and you know that mj helps her deal with the chemo treatment and keeps allows her more comfort, then you don't care what the govt "labels" it... you go and purchase it for her care. I love that certain states have said a big F-You to the govt in allowing medical access for mj.. just hate that during slow times the DEA and FBI bust up state approved mj distribution centers and ruin plants for the dist. centers patients. Its rather sick that our govt continues to rule against the will of the people. Most of America.. over 60% would like to see mj legalized and sold in a store (like a liquor store) and is "sin" taxed to help provide money that our govt agencies desperately need. AND Americans approve its medical uses by a larger margin.. but that has to do with big pharma.. god-forbid a stinking weed provide so much great help with relief from stress, depression, aches and pains, etc... They'd be out of business with the loss of so many people walking into the Pot Store and buying something as simple as a weed.. or for people just to grow it in their garden... LOL.

49. Big Pharma can't patent anything natural, like mj. It's all about the
fat bottom line, nothing to do with anything else. If they could put a patent on mj, you BET they'd lobby congress to get it legalized!

Anyone claiming their herbal methods can cure are in trouble with the FDA. They'll shut you down faster than you can say "cure" and prosecute you to the full extent of the law, even throw you in prison just so you know who you've effed with.

Marijuana has so many positive uses in today's world of terminal diseases that if the FDA really is interested in helping the American people, they'd lobby to have it legalized, and allow Americans to grow the stuff in their backyard for personal use.

But Big Pharma owns our Congress-critters and unless Americans stand up against them and force those reps and senators to look out for the best interests of the people that have sent them to their posh offices and jobs, nothing will change.

16. Costas just breathlessly reported this on the SB pre-game show -
Just once, I want one of these guys to say the following after they get their picture taken like the one above:

Yeah, I smoked some pot. So, what? Did I harm anyone? NO. Did I harm myself? NO. I smoked a few bowls, and I'll smoke a few more if I feel like it. Most of America has smoked it at one time or another, maybe we need to look into why it's still illegal and why no one wants to talk about that. I don't give a damn if you like it or not so get over it.

Meanwhile, what legal drug is decisively linked to violence, crime, etc etc?? Booze.

Although I agree with your premise about regulations, the fact is that it is still against the law.

guess I'd be more surprised by celebs who put their integrity above $$$ driven pretense.

The argument that it's against the law, therefore it's bad and should remain against the law, because it's against the law, and those who break this law should be censured because they're breaking the law, is a circular argument. I find no value in it.

Ross Rebagliati won the snowboarding gold when HE was lit; I see no reason why Michael Phelps cannot do the same.

My good friend is a professional judo wrestler with realistic expectations to be in the 2012 Games. Her argument with pot is that it can be used as a bronchial dilator and analgesic. However, it's training season, it's not like he's getting high right before he races. The real issue here is the 3 year testing policy. Honestly, doping and beating drug testing is an art form in sports at this level. Something like pot is the least of the IOC's worries and they should really just worry about steroid testing for the 3 year span.

Edited on Sun Feb-01-09 05:24 PM by cbc5g
He won all those gold medals and the critics haven't won any. What right do they have to even talk down to him about smoking marijuana? They probably get wasted off alcohol, a far more dangerous drug, every night.

If I were Phelps I'd just retire and live off the large amounts of money he has made. Go chill in the Caribbean for awhile. He'll never get more gold medals than he got last olympic games. He shouldn't have apologized, he should have stood up for peoples rights to use marijuana even if it cost him some opportunities. Sometimes standing up for something is better than cowering and apologizing.

He could have helped create a new dialogue in America about marijuana, he could have come out in support of people's rights and defended himself...but no he had to cower. Sad.
