Any guesses on how much the birth of the octuplets and their care
may cost?

I suspect that they will have to be in ICU for several months.

Any ideas? My guess is close to half a million dollars.

3. This woman obviously has mental health issues
and the doctor responsible for assisting her in this travesty should be shot. Or better yet, the doctor should foot the exorbitant bill for this folly.

5. That really isn't the point here.
The point is that her IVF doctor violated the standard of care by inserting so many fertilized ova at one time.

He needs to be stopped before he kills somebody.

13. I was thinking of universal health care
If we had one - would we, the tax payers, pay for this?

Or, would we, the tax payers, determine that we do not pay the bill? At least, not in its entirety?

And once we talk about "rationing" and "limiting" in connection with a universal health care, how many Americans - still enjoying their employer-provided health care - would climb on the barricades to prevent such a plan?

This, of course, is why neither Clinton nor Obama, not even Edwards, called for a true universal health care, knowing that most Americans like what they have... until they no longer have it.

And it is possible that with so many losing their jobs and their health insurance, that more will now join the supporters of national health coverage... until they get another job with "benefits."

6. Half a million is conservative. The mother was in the hospital
for quite a long time before the delivery. No need to worry though, the embryo-worshipping Republicans will all chip in and pay the bill and I'm sure the right-to-lifers will help support the family after they're home.:sarcasm:

10. actually, the republicans probably will chip in...
You've probably seen this before. These families who have sextuplets, or octuplets, or who have 19 kids, etc, all get tons of free volunteer child-care, and donations of diapers, money, etc, from the community.

They show these stories on TV and I always laugh, because you can bet lots of those same people hate welfare.

14. You probably are correct: "she got paid for it."
is what a neighbor told reporters.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090131/ap_on_re_us/octuplets

Yolanda Garcia, 49, of Whittier, said she helped care for Nadya Suleman's autistic son three years ago.

"From what I could tell back then, she was pretty happy with herself, saying she liked having kids and she wanted 12 kids in all," Garcia told the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

"She told me that all of her kids were through in vitro, and I said 'Gosh, how can you afford that and go to school at the same time?"' she added. "And she said it's because she got paid for it."

Garcia said she did not ask for details.

======

I think that the tax payers of California should ask for details.

11. A news report last night said likely $400k each child.
No idea exactly where they came up with that figure, I'm just repeating what I heard.

12. I heard 100 grand per week per baby
that would be 800 grand per week times 7 weeks (if they actually get out in 7 weeks). $5,600,000.00 is my guess. Who's keeping the pool figures? :)

15. This is plenty. All this while the State of California
is going broke, cannot pay its employees, supplier, refund taxes and cut on real welfare payments.
