 I thought that he wouldn't darken our door (national media) after the election. But no.

2. This is one issue, in which, we agree.
The Israeli side needs to be represented by A MORE MODERATE person. The guy from the Arab American Anti-Discrimination League was quite moderate and thoughtful.

Lanny Davis is OUT THERE .... Way way ... LOST.

9. OK, he finally said something true
Why didn't Jordan and Egypt and the other Arab nations recognize a Palestinian state between 1948 and 1967? And that is a valid point.

10. True, but that's history. Perhaps it can encourage Egypt and Jordan to return to the table but
they are already motivated.

17. Hey Cali, you might read Lanny's transcript from Amy
Goodman's show.

He makes some very good points .. points that are absolutely true.

You know better than to blast someone like him as a complete liar.

Come on now.

http://www.democracynow.org/2009/1/12/fmr_clinton_special_counsel_lanny_davis

Let’s start with the international law issue. It is a violation of international law to deliberately launch rockets from within civilian areas. Article 53 of the Geneva Accords expressly says that. Yet the professor forgot to mention that. It is not a violation of international law to defend yourself if you’re not intentionally targeting civilians.

<snip>

It is the Egyptians that have blocked access. You must ask the Egyptian government, “Why are you blocking access?” Because they know these tunnels have been used by Hamas not to resupply their people with food and medical aid, but with rockets who are placed among civilians, next to schools, under hospitals, to kill civilians in Israel.

23. I read it. I'm not impressed with what he says
though I don't dispute that the rockets out of Gaza are despicable and a breach of international law. But nothing happens in a vacume and it must all be looked at in the context of a brutal decades long occupation. That's not an excuse for the rockets. I think firing them is indefensible. And again, the rockets do not pose an existential threat to Israel. The IDF does pose an existental threat to Gaza.

And sorry, with the exception of a couple of sentences. Davis' spiel this morning was simply pro-israel propaganda.

11. If you have to be "Jewish" to be a citizen of Israel, how is that "a democracy?"
Edited on Sat Jan-31-09 09:57 AM by ShortnFiery
That is one thing that I can't figure out.

13. What are you talking about? You do not have to be Jewish to be
a citizen of Israel. There are bedouins, Christians, Muslims who are citizens of Israel. There are Arab parties. There are Arab members of the Knesset. There's at least one Arab in the Cabinet. There's certainly discrimination, but it's not legal discrimination.

14. OK, I did know there are Arab Israelis. However, if someone wanted to migrate there
don't they have to be Jewish? Yes, I stand corrected - these other cultures and religions - Israelis get an equal vote?

Make me smart cali? Really. ;)

16. No. It's much, much easier to become an Israeli citizen
if you fit into the law of return catagories which are based on the 1935 Nuremburg Laws that outline who was considered a Jew in Nazi Germany. That included anyone with 1 Jewish Grandparent. And yes, all Israeli citizens of whatever background have an equal vote. 10% of Israel's citizens are Arab Muslims.

19. There is a real problem with the religious nutcases
in Israel. And they have gained more power over the past several years. A lot of them are concentrated in settlements and that's a very, very bad thing.

You know, like "equal rights" are generally understood by Americans.

22. They do under the law
except for some weird marriage laws which are pretty repulsive, but in actuality, no. There are a lot of inequities for the minority in Israel. Here's a link to a really good site.
