Kansas rep proposes law making sonograms available to women seeking abortions
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 01:45 PM by proud2Blib
Kansas State Rep. Lance Kinzer, an Olathe Republican, is again pushing a bill stating that women be given the option of viewing a sonogram before they receive an abortion.

It's one of a few provisions in a bill that Kinzer said is designed to give women more objective information before they receive an abortion.

Several of these proposals were inserted into earlier legislation - most notably a bill vetoed last year by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Democrat.

Kinzer said his approach this year is to craft a narrower bill designed to "find some common ground with folks who may not necessarily vote pro-life all the time," he said.

1. So when was the last time Lance was pregnant?
Amazing all these conservative males fixated on female anatomy.

2. You mean they don't have the option now?
I thought abortion providers always took a sonogram before initiating the procedure anyway. What? The woman can't ask to look?

(FWIW, 59 percent of all abortions are performed before eight (8) weeks of gestation; therefore, the woman would see a fluttering dot, at most)

4. If only CongressCritters could give somewhere near as much attention to the whole living woman
as they give to the tiny dot in the uterus. But no, only the dot matters, never whether or not the woman can afford to raise a child for the next 16-18 years.

13. Have you ever read Anne Lamott?
I love her stuff - don't always agree with her but I love the way she writes.

She is a Jesus person but she is very pro choice. She has had abortions, doesn't apologize for it, and is very upfront about it. That really takes a lot of courage.

And I love her dreadlocks.

27. Just added to my reading list after looking her up in Wiki.
quote from Wiki:
============================
"You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do." (Traveling Mercies; although on page 22 of Bird by Bird she attributes this quote to "my priest friend Tom")
============================
Sounds like my kind of writer, yes. Will start with her Salon articles.

36. I love her stuff. It is so down to earth.
She is a lot more churchy than I am but it really doesn't matter one bit that you don't agree with her. Her stuff is still really fun to read.

She has kind of a big cult following, I think. And the right wing would hate her. She is a real feminist in the truest sense of the word.

3. Boy does that sound like Kansas. Is Kline the silent partner in that
debate.

I wish these guys would just leave women alone. They can make their own decisions just fine, thank you very much. They don't need male imput.

5. Red herring alert....
I believe the first attempt was to force the woman to view the sonogram.

It would seem that the "option" would always be there, unless the insurer or provider denied it, in which case they should be forced to provide it on demand at no cost.

This whole "finding common ground with folks who may not...vote pro-life" crap sounds like stealth talk to me. When did the fundies ever voluntarily compromise anything?

9. People never compromise on the abortion issue.
Its impossible to even have any kind of discussion with them. They just start yelling and that is the end of that.

10. Wouldn't this be an "unfunded mandate?"
I thought Repubs were against "unfunded mandates."

The legislation would require:

* That women be given the opportunity to see a sonogram of the fetus, hear its heartbeat and get a copy of the sonogram if they choose.

* That abortion clinics distribute a list of where women can get pregnancy counseling and care/counseling for medically challenging pregnancies.

* That the state create an informational video and website showing fetal development.

* That abortion clinics post signs telling women that coerced abortions are against the law.

How are they going to pay for these?

12. How about as part of a comprehensive health care package?
Along with child care programs for single parents? Education credits? Food assistance? Mass transit?

And if they're really "pro-life", maybe they should get rid of the death penalty.

24. Of course it is Lance.
What a jerk. I want him out so badly. He does provide comic relief but people suffer when he opens his pie hole. I believe a sonogram is available to everyone is it not? Why would he word it this way? There is no reason for this. There is something coming next that would correct that wording to say that they MUST view a sonogram. I wish he would dry up and blow away. He is the puss in the boil of the Kansas RW.

26. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a sonogram must be done anyway
so the location of the embryo can be determined. I am completely against forcing a woman to look at it.

38. Since Kinzer is so worried about life getting extinguished,
maybe he should get off his fscking ass and fight for single-payer healthcare, to keep 273 people from dying in the U.S. every day because we don't have a right to healthcare. So-called "pro-lifers" are not in the least bit concerned about life.
