Where does your state rank on the pain scale?
http://money.cnn.com/news/storysupplement/economy/gapmap/index.htm

mouse over your state to get the numbers. There are three tabs: unemployment, budget deficit, and foreclosures.

9. The problem with budget deficit is that unlike the others it is not normalized in some way
Say budget deficit/budget or budget deficit/population. (the first would be better because it implicitly pulls in some information on the state's ability to raise money. The same number could be mean their projected liabilities are 1% more than their projected revenues or it could be say, 10%. That makes a huge difference.

4. NC - High Unemp; low on foreclosures
Unemployment 7.9%

foreclosures - less than 2% (pretty good for now, but what about the future if unemployment continues scary?)

Budget deficit - 800 million (lighter side of bad)

8. Alaska's in pretty good shape except for unemployment.
Unemployment 7.3%
No budget deficit
.88% foreclosure rate

The legislature was prudent enough to sock away a wad of money last year when oil prices were high.

13. The NBC Nightly News yesterday said even Alaska was facing a shortfall now
Lester Holt said it was a relatively small deficit compared to other states (they highlighted California and Florida), but- as they put it - "even the oil-rich state of Alaska faces a deficit."
Then they cut away to a video clip of Palin addressing the State Congress :puke:

15. Her state of the state address was pathetic.
She sounded like a completely different person than she did last year -- I guess she had somebody write it for her in 2008. Mudflats has a funny post about the speech. "State of the State: A Blizzard of Words." http://www.themudflats.net/2009/01/23/state-of-the-state-a-blizzard-of-words/ Embedded within is a link to Andrew Halcro's blog which compares the two speeches. The difference is glaring.

10. The data doesn't have the newest numbers yet
because I know Michigan's unemployment is 10.6 now, not 9.6. MI has a high unemployment rate and also a pretty high foreclosure rate. We have a low budget deficit compared to many states though.

But we did have to take W back, which should count for something!

And the reason we don't have a budget deficit is by law it isn't allowed. But the latest forecast from the Comptroller's office is a big drop in revenue, which I'm sure we'll budget for with more belt-tightening for the poor.

21. I bet they have few jobs in manufacturing, and a large number of
jobs in agriculture. They could have slow population growth, which takes pressure off employment.
