The Feverish Baby/Global Warming Analogy Expanded
Concerned Mother: Dr. Carson, I my baby has a fever.
Dr. Carson: Why do you think that?
CM: Well, look, I took his temperature and-
DC: His temperature was elevated?
CM: yes, it was 102.
DC: Let’s not become too alarmed. You must realize that most temperature fluctuations are quite normal. In fact, there really is no one normal temperature. Most people say it should be 98.6, but throughout history at different times different people have had different temperatures and there has been no cause for concern
CM: But the thermometer-
DC: You took his temperature in his ear, right? Well, I’m feeling his feet right now and they feel cold. Therefore, he can’t be too feverish. Let’s look at all of the data here.
CM: I called the Medical HelpLine and they said a fever was a cause for concern.
DC: Most doctors are buying into this pseudo-science about fevers. They are trying to convince parents to be worried over every temperature fluctuation because they know that the only way to make money is to exploit parents' fears for their babies’ health.
CM: But all the peer- reviewed articles published say these symptoms are indicative of a fever and a fever is a cause for concern.
DC: There are plenty of doctors who do not feel that way. But, the Fever FearMongers ruthlessly censor these honest professionals and call their credentials into question. Worse, they are making you doubt your abilities as a parent to take care of your child.
CM: Doctor Carson, what should I do?
DC: You should continue to do just as you have been doing. There is no cause for concern. There is no need to do anything differently.
