LONDON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Britain's Plain English Campaign has singled out the country's meteorology authority and U.S. President George W. Bush as butchers of the language.
The campaign's annual awards, presented by impressionist Rory Bremner, awarded a "Golden Bull" award for needlessly complicating language to the country's weather forecasting Met Office for a particularly long-winded 45-word report that the Plain English Campaign said could have been simplified as: "We're not sure," The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.
President Bush received a "Foot in Mouth" lifetime achievement award for his storied past of confusing statements, including a 2004 statement to an Oregon crowd that was cited by the judges: "I hope you leave here and walk out and say, 'What did he say?'"
The awards also honored those the organization feels has contributed to the use of plain English when addressing the public, including Cancer Research U.K., the Forestry Commission and BBC2's Newsnight.
