"When we have a colored President..."
I found this inscription in my great aunt's high school yearbook, class of 1924:

...When grapes grow as big as pumpkins
When Rockefeller hasn't got a cent
When bull-frogs start singing Bee's Knees
When we have a colored President
When Ivory Soap sinks in the water
and the crust of the earth falls thru
and when we don't have any more movies
Then I might forget about you...

This is my great aunt in her dad's car:

Don't think driving humongous cars in the years before a Great Depression is anything new...

What's different this time is that we've got Barack Obama as our President. Repairing and rebuilding our crumbling economy doesn't seem so impossible now.

1. Wonderful!
Reading inscriptions in high school yearbooks is wonderful. That one is priceless.

3. Lindsay Lohan wouldn't be out of place in a 1920's Hollywood speakeasy
With or without Samantha.

12. 'Speakeasy' - I thought that was a place that sold alchcolic beverages illegally and not a brothel?

16. In some speakeasies it's traditional to throw your underwear at the DJ.
But best be careful getting into a car afterwards with all those the paparazzi around.

If guys commonly wore skirts, they'd be underwear throwers too. Maybe they do somewhere.

4. Hey. Little genetic engineering, and the grapes might grow as
big as pumpkins too.

5. And Bullfrogs singing Bee's Knees!
We know these days where the crust falls thru: It's called a subduction zone.

Hmmm. Maybe we could make a pumpkin smaller too, sort of the reverse of the giant pumpkin contests.

In 2001 Ivory Soap held a contest where you could win money if you found one of 1051 bars of soap that didn't float.

6. Is that car a Pierce Arrow? Looks like a 'bootleggers' car to me. My dad used to workrk
on them in a town on the New York/Canadian border.

11. I wouldn't put anything past them.
It's never been clear to me what my family did during prohibition. I can picture my grandfather driving that car for my great aunt's dad. He was rather a dashing and dangerous fellow. It wouldn't be surprising if a guy like that married one of the boss-man's daughters.

8. there are country people here that still use the term....
'colored people'. I use to correct everyone that I heard say it whether I knew them or not. I gave up a few years ago (as long as it was just a mistake on their part and not racism), figuring that most of those who use this term will die off before I got around to correcting all of them.

9. I think of it as a very old-fashioned term -- not bad, just out of date by several generations
I think you're right that the term will die a natural death.

15. But "person of color" isn't out of date. Language fashion is so random
I always think of that SNL skit where Sinbad played a Civil War soldier who said, "We prefer the more respectful term of 'boy'!"
