Dalai Lama says next successor could be a girl
http://ibnlive.in.com/news/dalai-lama-says-next-successor-could-be-a-girl/78839-2.html

McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh: The Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama has sought to put all speculation about his retirement plans at rest saying he would continue to lead the Tibetans "till death". He also surprised all by saying that the next spiritual leader could be a girl.

Talking to the media after a six day meeting of top Tibetan leaders, the Dalai Lama said he would be committed to the Tibetan cause till his death . And that the question of choosing the next leader would arise only if the majority of Tibetans wanted the institution of the Dalai Lama to live on.

Talking about the next spiritual leader being agirl, Dalai Lama said, "The next leader could be a girl. They are more compassionate and are equally competent."

"No one expected the Dalai Lama to say such a thing. But one expects the progressive leader to have such an outlook towards equality of women," said Tenzing Nyesang.

Even as the Dalai Lama stated that there is no question of his retirement till the Tibetan issue is resolved. And the Tibetans go back to their homeland, he has raised the possibility that the next Dalai Lama could actually be a girl. Which is a break in tradition, perhaps in keeping with the times.

2. Well, that's progress
Unfortunately, even the Buddhists absorbed tribal, patriarchal nonsense over the years. This announcement is way, way overdue and I'm glad he finally made it.

Lots of sects are now being dragged, kicking and screaming (well, chanting), into the rest of the human race.

The sects that have been translated into the west are liberalizing the fastest.

3. Well, we'll get the Prop 8 people right on that
I'm sure they can find something in the bible that says the Dalai Lama has to be a boy.
