Billboard's 'Captivity' audience disgusted
March 18, 2007

Shanise Laurent and her friends left Palms Middle School one afternoon last week and stopped for a soda at Jack in the Box.

Shanise, a seventh-grader, didn't need me to point out the billboard across the street. She said she had noticed it the day before.

"What a graphic, nasty billboard," said the 13-year-old.

------

Across the busy intersection of Overland and Venice was one of 30 billboards in the Los Angeles area promoting the May 18 release of the film "Captivity." The ad consisted of four panels:

Obscenity! They're up in New York too. Go Hollywood! :puke:

1. You're late to the party. This is Popular Horror!
Practically every film that's been made in the last thirty or so years under the category "Horror" has been about one subject: torturing and killing women. It's what America wants! It's hip! It's cool! It's vengeance against the sex that tantalizes and oppresses males. It's what America wants.

Where the hell have you been, that you didn't know this? Why haven't you been picketing Anne Rice wherever she appears, since her books promote rape (made noble by calling it "vampirism")? And picketing her now is important, because she now claims to be Christian, trying to "redeem her soul" against the evil she barely recognizes she's done?

And none of the lame rationalizations by King or Koontz can paint a bright sunny face on this monstrous face of humanity.

2. Did you even read the article?
See what's really scary to me is that x number workers put up that many billboards without a single question being asked.

You agree that school children should be exposed to violent sexual material?

Dear friend, that's not art, that's crap and it shouldn't be in the public space like that for the whole world to see.

Why do we even have a rating system?

:hurts:

11. Got news for you. Children ARE exposed to violence.
Regularly. On a continual basis. Of course the workers put up the signs without question or complaint; when you make minimum wage you do what you're told, or you don't get paid and your family doesn't eat.

If you want to complain about children being exposed to this, write to the magazine that promotes violence films. It's called GoreZone. It publicizes these films to their many violence-loving fans. It is, like most entertainment magazines, just a bunch of media whores for the film companies that buy ads in the magazine and give its writers "sneak previews."

Go ahead and write a letter, notarized and insured with return receipt, so you know that the letter will get to their offices. If you get any kind of response from them, either in print or in a return letter, it will look like the following:

"BWAAA-ha-haa! Go to bed, old woman! And if you're lucky, our mascot Freddy Krueger will kill you in your dreams! BWAAA-ha-haa!"

Go ahead. Write the letter. See what your response will get. I dare you. I DOUBLE dare you. And maybe you'll learn something about the nature of American corporate entertainment.

3. Even 'Gone With The Wind' (in the Hays Code era) romanticized rape.
Edited on Sun Mar-18-07 06:10 PM by TahitiNut
I can't regard Rhett's forcing himself on Scarlett as anything but rape ... no matter how many women swoon over Gable. "Mixed messages" anyone? "No" means "no" ... except when Scarlett says it? (One of the more despicable 'heroines' in movie history, imho.)

6. Yep
The problem isn't porn, it's depictions of violence against women (which can include porn).

8. yep.. and unfortunately unless there's a "damsel in distress'
it apparently is not "interesting".

It's a big reason I rarely go to movies

9. Melodrama.
All melodrama (the way many seem to live their lives) requires a Victim, a Villain, and a Rescuer.

Lots of folks "try out" for the parts of Victim and Rescuer. The part of Villain is always assigned, it seems.

In a kind of social Munchausen syndrome (or Munchausen by proxy syndrome), the one surreptitiously playing the Villain role usually claims the Victim role in the PlayBill ... in a constant competition for the center of the stage. It's no accident that person is also practiced at making the Rescuer look good.
