Why did terrorist lowlife Khalid Sheikh Mohammed tell his American interrogators that there was a plot for shoe bombings of two airliners, when only one such try -- the failed attempt on a 2001 trans-Atlantic flight by Richard Reid -- is known about?

Here's what was reported in the transcript (PDF file), that his confession statement presented at his Guantanamo tribunal included this :

I was responsible for the Shoe Bomber Operation to down two American airplanes.

<snip>

Why? Because I still remembered this report, from the Canadian National Post of Aug. 27, 2004 (on Nexis, no longer online):

A captured al-Qaeda operative has told Canadian intelligence investigators that a Montreal man who trained in Afghanistan alongside the 9/11 hijackers was responsible for the crash of an American Airlines flight in New York three years ago.

<snip>

I want to be clear about one thing. I wrote this post because I think there's a significant chance that KSM is indeed trying to take credit for downing Flight 587 here, since the claim so closely dovetails the Canadian report of a second shoe bomber, plus the fact that both were "American" Airlines flights.

1. What was the flight that supposedly exploded from fumes in a tank?? I recall Peter
Lance, in his Triple Cross time line writing about this.

2. Are you referring to TWA Flight 800? Blew up and crashed into Long Island Sound?
there were lots of reports, some off the wall, some seemingly credible, of a missle bringing that one down.
NTSB, a pretty reliable agency, concluded fumes in a fuel tank exploded...

3. No, no, no. no. no. no....goddamit.
AA 587 was brought down by the aerodynamic force of fully deflecting the Airbus rudder three times. It was not terrorism, but a result of the pilot's upset training. IT WAS NOT TERRORISM!
