New Va. pharmacy won’t sell any contraceptives
Store follows Roman Catholic teachings; some fear impact on rural women

updated 3:07 p.m. PT, Tues., Oct. 21, 2008

CHANTILLY, Va. - A new drug store at a Virginia strip mall is putting its faith in an unconventional business plan: No candy. No sodas. And no birth control.

Divine Mercy Care Pharmacy is among at least seven pharmacies across the nation that are refusing as a matter of faith to sell contraceptives of any kind, even if a person has a prescription. States across the country have been wrestling with the issue of pharmacists who refuse on religious grounds to dispense birth control or morning-after pills, and some have enacted laws requiring drug stores to fill the prescriptions.

In Virginia, though, pharmacists can turn away any prescription for any reason.

“I am grateful to be able to practice,” pharmacy manager Robert Semler said, “where my conscience will never be violated and my faith does not have to be checked at the door each morning.”

----------------

“This pharmacy is a vibrant example of our Holy Father’s charge to all of us to wear our faith in the public square,” said Loverde, who sprinkled holy water on the shelves stocked with painkillers and acne treatments. “It will allow families to shop in an environment where their faith is not compromised.” :wtf:

-----------------

The Virginia store’s policy has drawn scorn from some abortion rights groups, who have already called for a boycott and collected more than 1,000 signatures protesting the pharmacy.

9. I HOPE somebody can watch to see just how long this place stays in business!
I don't know anything about the area where this pharmacy is, but everywhere I've lived, the convenience of getting your prescriptions filled at your local supermarket, or the large chain drug stores like CVS, RiteAid, Wallgreens, etc. have put most of the old fashioned "drug stores" out of business. I'm 65, so I have no reason to give my prescription business to any retailer for any reason other than price & convenience. I guess they better hope there are a LOT of strict practicing Catholics living in their area, or they'll soon find their business plan is flawed! I can't remember when I last met ANY Catholics who refused to use BC. The morning after pill, I understand, but I'm also a practicing Catholic, and I 've used BC pills when I was younger, because I think it's being a responsible human being when you choose not to produce more children than you can afford to raise!

11. Whaddya wanna bet he censors the magazine rack too?
“It will allow families to shop in an environment where their faith is not compromised.”

A faith that is compromised by soda and birth control, is hardly a strong one.

12. This seems to happen here in VA every election cycle.
Happened in 2000, 2004, 2006 midterm, and now.

Frankly, I think it's heinous. I know pharmacies are private businesses, but Doctors prescribe medications with the assumption that they can be taken and filled with a minimum of hassle. Ergo, pharmacists should NOT be able to refuse service to someone with a valid prescription.

Doctor trumps Pharmacist.

This is one of those things I really want to address when I run for General Assembly. Pharmacies should not be allowed to turn away valid prescriptions.
