Larisa Alexandrovna: The Right Has Fallen And Can't Get Up

The right has fallen and it can't get up...

There is horror and panic on the far right, alarm bells are ringing, screams, hair-pulling, cats and dogs sleeping together, panic, panic, panic.

Why are the unhinged becoming psychotic you ask? Well, the far-right is suddenly worried about something called checks and balances:

Though we doubt most Americans realize it, this would be one of the most profound political and ideological shifts in U.S. history. Liberals would dominate the entire government in a way they haven't since 1965, or 1933. In other words, the election would mark the restoration of the activist government that fell out of public favor in the 1970s. If the U.S. really is entering a period of unchecked left-wing ascendancy, Americans at least ought to understand what they will be getting, especially with the media cheering it all on.

Wow, you mean a contrived Permanent Republican Majority is okay, but a legitimate shift away from such a power grab is not? Really, what type of chaos and horror could a left-leaning government enforce upon us? What types of crimes against us could be committed without checks and balances? Perhaps these things might happen:

1. The United States violates Geneva Conventions as a matter of policy, kidnaps and tortures people, and keeps prisoners of unknown origin, without charge, in secret prisons all over the world. We might even see images of extreme human rights abuses carried out in our name, such as the one at left.

- snip -

3. Massive corruption and theft of billions of dollars are rewarded by the biggest power grab in US history, transfer of public funds into government/corporate hands, and the nationalization of US banks.

4. The Department of Justice is used as a political tool, perverting the rule of law, and destroying confidence in our legal system.

- snip -

9. The country moves closer to the establishment of a national religion, Christianity, and the doctrines of that religion are forced upon citizens who do not practice it.

10. Government propaganda is delivered on a mass scale through the use of paid journalists, government subsidized programs and channels, and government censorship of real news.

I could go on, but you get the idea. What the right-wing is afraid of should a fully liberal government come to power is exactly what has happened as a result of the right-wing's attempt at a permanent majority.

- snip -

The right-wing, however, wants all of these powers and allows for all of these abuses, so long as it benefits them and their party. So by all means let the panic begin, if for no other reason than for the right-wing to experience only for a little while what the rest of us has had to endure for years: panic.

That said, I would hope that a left-leaning government would be stripped of the powers acquired by the right-wing government, because regardless of party and politics, no such powers should be held by a few over the many. I would also hope that all abuses of power under the Bush administration be punished under the full weight of the law. Then, and only then, might we once again become a democracy. But I wager that the right-wing will choose party loyalty over the rule of law should anyone attempt to hold Bush administration criminal elements accountable, proving once again, that for the far right, democracy translates to supremacy and "rule of law" becomes "rule."
