We shall overcome, we shall overcome...

We shall overcome, we shall overcome,
We shall overcome someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, i do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

The lord will see us through, the lord will see us through,
The lord will see us through someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, i do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

We're on to victory, we're on to victory,
We're on to victory someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, i do believe,
We're on to victory someday.

We'll walk hand in hand, we'll walk hand in hand,
We'll walk hand in hand someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, i do believe,
We'll walk hand in hand someday.

We are not afraid, we are not afraid,
We are not afraid today;
Oh, deep in my heart, i do believe,
We are not afraid today.

The truth shall make us free, the truth shall make us free,
The truth shall make us free someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, i do believe,
The truth shall make us free someday.

We shall live in peace, we shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, i do believe,
We shall live in peace someday.

Hold on, hold on
Keep your eyes on the prize anbd hold on

But one thing that we did right was the day that we began to fight

12. Somebody on teevee yesterday said that white people should try to see this as black people do ......
..... That Obama will be the first president who happens to be black and not the **First Black President**

And is that not the true fulfillment of the dreams of Martin and the Kennedys?

23. I find I'm happier seeing it as a human being and American ...
... and regarding the success (so far, and prospectively) of his candidacy as good for EVERYONE. I have NEVER knowingly voted for any candidate who wasn't committed to serving ALL of America. Everyone. One of the MAJOR reasons I could NEVER vote for Poppy Bush was his attitude regrading "real Americans"! Fuck that corrupt, divisive piece of fascist shit! I have less than no interest in ANY candidate possessed of the attitude that it's only 'real' Americans (or 'some') deserving of representation. Obama is a transcendent candidate ... one of the (if not THE) best Presidential candidates of my long lifetime. If he's faking it, he's better at faking it than anyone I've ever seen. I regard it as a service to the very soul of America, and my community, that he stands up as a candidate who just HAPPENS to be black (or regarded as such). The character and integrity of the person and is campaign shows through.

... for nations have souls, and karma accrues to them too.

18. That brings back some good (and some not very good) memories.
I'm reminded of my first protest march. (Yes, it was "we shall overcome.") I'm reminded of Dr. King's service to my soul. I'm reminded of the almost-unbounded hatred targeting me as a "n_____-lover." (I'm forever proud to be a LOVER and not a HATER.)

The rats are being crowded into an ever-shrinking corner. Let's never underestimate the willingness of haters to commit atrocities.

At the same time, let's never underestimate the power of a loving heart. We ARE family.

we played to death ("Peter, Paul and Mommy" and "Peter, Paul and Mommy Too") On one of them there is a track of "We Shall Overcome" - in the intro to the song, Peter or Paul says "we sang this song with MLK, and now we'd like to sing it with you", and kids in the audience join in on some of the verses. The sound of children singing that song along with P,P & M brought me to tears every time.

Thanks, Swampy.

43. My son will make a speech as MLK jr tomorrow to earn him a place
on a surfboard that heads back, from a desert island, to the present and future. It's a great event in the 6th grade each year at his school. Last year my daughter was the Buddha.

The kids present who they 'were', what they achieved, accomplished, believed and then why they should be selected by the judges as one of three (out of 22 this year) to be brought back to help the people and planet of earth.

My son opens with the first sentence of the "I have a dream" speech. He's not much on delivery but still this brings me shivers. He is focused on what he will do (as MLK Jr) to bring equality to people all over the third world, to help the homeless gain their rights and access to services, and to help Tibet gain independence as "all countries have a right to be their own country." He is Tibetan and this is near and dear to him. I am SO PROUD OF HIM.

Thanks for reading this proud mama's post. And, for those who don't know, shanti means peace in Nepali and Hindi.

PS Tahitinut, I so agree. We are all lovers, not haters. I am sad that DU houses so much hate.
