For an excellent rendition of the story, read Gates of Fire. It's one hell of a novel.

The first several pages are available online to read.

I believe you will agree with me right from the start that this is a book completely unlike 300. This one is infused with history and gives a better sense of what it was like back in the day.

1. Yes, it's true. Books give more insight into history than movies.
300 rocked, but I might read the book anyway.

2. Frank Miller is a mythologist not a historian
In that he's interested in creating a mythology. and for those who don't know, it's generally a right wing mythology.

4. 300 is an art piece that grew out of a overgrown comic book
Its not political, its graphics (and graphic). Enjoy it for what it is, since it is obvious what it is not.

As for political leanings, they are non-existent. Those that read them into it are simply seeing their own biases and fears reflected back to them.
