Too busy to volunteer for the local Democratic Party or for the campaign? Here's how you can help!
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 11:18 AM by KzooDem
I've volunteered for the last 3 presidential elections. I answered phones, canvassed, licked envelopes, delivered yard signs, drove people to polling places to vote on election day, just to name a few. I would like nothing more than to help this year, in such an important election. But I'm back in school full-time and working part-time, and I have no more time to give to anything at the moment.

But it occurred to me when I was out grocery shopping this morning that the volunteers that are working in the trenches in this closing stretch of the election get hungry. I remember sitting in phone rooms and conference rooms with my stomach growling. So, since it was getting close to lunch time I stopped by Little Caeser's and picked up several Hot N Now pizzas and a couple 2-litre bottles of pop and took them into the local Democratic headquarters and said to the workers there "Enjoy!"

They get lunch, and I feel like I have helped support them in some small way. It took me all of 15 minutes and $25.

Next week, I think it will be coffee and pumpkin spice doughnuts on Friday morning.

Some of us in larger urban areas could even band together and "adopt" a local campaign or Democratic Party office to keep them well fed and energized to do the work that we have no time to do at the moment.

Just an idea.

1. That's a great idea, KzooDem
I'm somewhat ashamed not to know.... but... how would we go about finding where the headquarters are.

2. That is a terrific idea and one we have tried to get our phone bank people to use
The other day while making calls, I talked to a lady who could not come in to volunteer but she said she spent all her time in the kitchen. So I suggested that she send her husband with some healthy food for the volunteers and staff. We've had nothing but junk food in HQ for the last several weeks.

I am not sure if it was her, but someone brought in a wonderful black beans and rice casserole later that day - it was great and the volunteers who had come straight from work loved it.

Salad and fruit go over big as many of the staffers are spending 12-14 hours a day seven days a week and would love something healthy.

4. Yeah, I was conflicted about taking pizza, but it was a spur of the moment thing.
I'll try to plan ahead more so I can actually make something a little healthier and take it in.

6. Pizza is the one thing that will make all the staffers drop everything and run to eat
Somebody made the mistake of only bringing one pizza to HQ today. By the time the word got around, it was all gone and a lot of staffers were wandering around salivating. If I can head in early enough Monday, I will order two pizzas to pick up on my way in.

Somebody did bring in a large - very large - box of terrific cookies, so that at least gave the guys some fuel to keep going.
