9. I disagree with harun, he SHOULD be on the corporate media
He should be on the corporate media so he can help CHANGE it. The major networks are not going to disappear, they will just get bigger and bigger so its imperative to have smart, straightforward guys like Cenk be part of them. I just watched that CNN clip of him and was so relieved to see someone FINALLY talking common sense and sounding intelligent. Palin was an embarrassment, the fact that the corporate media says they tied is ridiculous. Just because she met her ridiculously low expectations doesn't mean anything. That one dumb pundit said she tied because she "proved" she was not a laughing-stock. Cenk's expression to that said it all. Is that the benchmark we use to select our leaders? That they aren't laughingstocks??

I would gladly sign any letter of support for Cenk to have his own show anywhere he chooses.

10. The Young Turks guy? No thanks
Edited on Mon Oct-06-08 05:53 PM by jpgray
TYT is uniformly lousy. The presentation is ugly and the content is poorly-written. They only seem to rehash and cannibalize other media, and what little "insight" TYT provides is either rock-to-the-face obvious or wholly unsubstantiated speculation. I want analysis that seeks to engage and challenge rather than simply flatter; I don't want a left version of right-wing talk radio.

What do I like, then? Bill Moyers. That's the sort of journalist I can get behind.

32. Right Wing Talk Radio? You clearly don't listen to the show
Cenk regularly and consistently criticizes BOTH parties. He does so to the point where some Dems don't like him because they prefer to be party line ass kissers.

O'Reilly, Limbaugh and the like almost never criticize Republicans, and if they do it's lightly and or in times where it's politically convenient.

Say what you want about Cenk, but you have to respect the fact that he's honest, passionate and gives it to both sides.

PS---He has awesome guests on a regular basis. Maddow, Michael Moore, Phil Donahue...hell, Naomi Klein AND Naomi Wolf were on the show on the same day a couple of weeks ago. The very fact that he's able to attract such quality guests shows you're in the minority. Which is fine, not everyone can have good taste.

37. Cheers for him having good people on, and having mostly the right ideas
I should point out that I'm a big fat snob when it comes to journalism and/or punditry. I don't doubt that Cenk would do a job relatively within the current standards of TV media, I just think our standards should be on a whole other level. I wouldn't say David Gregory or Chris Matthews represent proper content or ability either. So, in other words, the above is my opinion only, and therefore subjective: I just don't like the style or content choices of the show. I don't doubt his heart in the right place, and the choice of guests is usually good.

42. That's a reasonable disagreement we can have, good response
The only other thing I would is that Cenk is light years ahead of Matthews and Gregory. They're in the 'conventional wisdom' MSM category.

Also, Cenk may not have the encyclopedic knowledge and dry delivery of some of the more serious choices preferred by some in this thread, but he's actually funny (to many people myself included). And he manages to distill complicated issues into easy to understand and repeatable ideas, important for winning over policy wonks AND non-policy wonks alike.

That's critical. I really enjoy Bill Moyers, but do you honestly think his ratings would be that great if he had an MSNBC show? Sadly I don't, because most viewers would get bored and tune him out (their loss). By contrast Cenk uses fun analogies, mixes in non-political stories, changes up his delivery, etc. You don't have to like his particular approach (it's clear you don't), but recognize the value of it in reaching a different segment of the population.

PS---I love Thom Hartmann and Rachel Maddow. And obviously, I love Cenk. Those three are incredibly different in background and style, but I think they are all valuable and amazing in their own unique ways. To take the example of Hartmann, I mean, the guy is brilliant. He is the most informed (on politics and history as it relates to politics) talk show host I've ever heard. But I don't think he would do well with a TV show. Most people would be bored to tears by his content and delivery. That sucks, but it's true.

Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 10:33 AM by ihavenobias
You've got some crazy high standards then.

He gets amazing guests on a regular basis and he asks them great questions. What more do you want? Judging the show based on the little youtube clip snippets is a bad idea, but apparently some people insist on doing that.

Oh well, their loss.

74. No, it depends on *why* they disagree
In one of my comments above I asked someone to clarify and they had a reasonable response. I disagreed, but I understood their perspective and it was logical.

By contrast there are some really mean spirited jerks (see thread) who just give vague insults and when pressed for an explanation they become even MORE insulting.

Their argument amounts to "LOL, Cenk sucks, LOL!!!"

Yes, that's being moronic.

But if someone says "I don't like his brashness and I think he jokes around too much about very serious issues" I disagree BUT it's not moronic. Does that make sense?

*By which is meant a real, sober conservative, not one of these right wing morons on crack who populate Fox News and tell the public all about how Saddam really was a threat and how he handed off his WMDs to Syria, how the war in Iraq is going, how the economy is fundamentally strong, how climate change is a Communist hoax and how any one who doesn't believe God anointed Bush to be president is guilty of blasphemy and should be burned at the stake in order to give the offender a foretaste of the fires of Hell.

MSNBC at least has KO and RM and is one of the more bearable channels right now (heh not that I really ever have the time to watch their shows but it is good to know they are out there ;)). CNN is insane-they have that awful person Glenn Beck on all the time from what I can tell. But, yeah I like Cenk-he is good at smacking down those RW drones on MSNBC and CNN. He may not be like Bill Moyers or John Pilger, but there is hardly anyone on tv out there who is like them these days. People like Cenk, KO etc. are vital for the left to have some sort of representation on tv and I love that Cenk doesn't back down and cuts through the bullshit spin the idiots on teevee keep spewing.

Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 02:52 PM by ihavenobias
There are some talk show hosts I don't especially like, but if someone creates a thread praising them I don't bother going into it #1, and #2 I don't bother leaving a comment on it.

Why? Because it's a waste of of my time and it just annoys people. Again, if the thread title was "Should Cenk have a TV show?" then yes, it'd make more sense for detractors to respond and weigh in.

69. Cenk would ROCK
but perhaps the world is not ready for the naked honesty that is Cenk Uygar! I for one, wish we were, and will work toward that goal.

71. I love Cenk, but I don't think he's a good fit as an MSNBC host.
Much more than even Maddow or Olbermann, Cenk is an *advocate*. He lives for confrontation. He's best when he's kicking the ass of some conservative.

Acting as host of a cable news show would rein him in too much.

right after Glen Beck.
