My friends son and his group all went to college and now either have a go nowhere job that they had to take just to get some income to pay their loans or no job at all. As a result they have become disenchanted and unambitious and now only do just enough to eke by. It's a sad commentary on our youth - I know. But they were fed the B.S. that a college education would set them up for life. Most of the jobs in their fields have either dried up, were farmed out overseas or are very low paying.
It seems to me that we have to first stop the flow of jobs out of the country and create more jobs here before we can get the college engine going as you suggest.
Also - boomers that can't afford to retire are still in the job market as a result this impacts on the new college grads ability to get a job. Boomers are willing to work harder, longer and not get pay raises - just to keep their job to pay their bills.
This country is really screwed up in this area and now with this economic crisis - and boomers retirement funds disappearing overnight - its going to make things even tougher for everyone.
I always pondered that if people aren't able to be employed, aren't able to make a decent living because raises are drying up - how would they be able to afford all those things that the rich fat cats want us to buy. If we can't afford to buy their product - eventually it affects the rich fat cats. They have to cut back on manufacturing - which further impacts jobs - right up and down the line. I think that is the situation we have now gotten ourselves into.
Someone needs to create jobs to get the engine of our economy working again. I'm sure that a million people out of work - affects the tax base coming into the government. Certainly - unemployment insurance monies is an outlay for a period of time to sustain these people.
Creating jobs and making everyone a contributor to the U.S. tax base. Stopping the flow of money to unemployment insurance. People having more money to be able to buy product, go to restaurants, travel, entertain themselves - will create more jobs and the engine will fire itself back up. I really don't think this is rocket science - but this has to start with job creation.
