Actual Pallin quote showing her stupidity on Energy

"Let me speak specifically about a credential that I do bring to this table, Charlie, and that's with the energy independence that I've been working on for these years as the governor of this state that produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy." --Sarah Palin, misstating the actual amount of energy produced by Alaska, which is only 3.5 percent, Sept. 11, 2008

wow.

thanks to Daniel Kurtzman - who captured this hilarious quote.

2. And also...
Alaska supplies oil to the United States, but very little natural gas. Alaska supplies
about 1-2 percent of America's natural gas.

So really, her quote was completely inaccurate on many levels.

7. I just saw Andrew Sullivan on Bill Maher's show saying Palin is "not very bright".
Edited on Sat Sep-20-08 11:41 AM by mwb970
The moment he said it I thought "Oh my God, he's right!" The OP and comment here use the word "stupid". It's true. Palin is stupid, and not very bright. This is the meme we need to push.

We talk about how her "views" on foreign policy are wacky, but actually it's because she's stupid. We are stunned by the black-and-white nature of her thinking, but this is exactly how stupid people (the ones who "don't do nuance") think. She stupidly allows her emotions and ego to override her brain. We marvel at her far-out anti-science religious views, but once again it stems from the very same thing: Sarah Palin is a stupid person. Period.

Palin thinks she's an expert on Russia because she's seen it. This is stupid. She had no doubts whatsoever that she is qualified to be president. Blind self-confidence is the prerogative of the stupid. And on and on and on it goes.

It's no coincidence that one of her few public interviews was a softballer with Sean Hannity, the undisputed King Of Stupid.

This isn't just an election. It's a referendum on whether the American people know stupid when they see it, and whether they want it in the White House.

10. Actually Moosebuger is probably more correcter that most think here.
Alaska puts most of its energy on the world market and could conceivably supply 20% of the US market if they didn't sell most of it to China.
But not having much of a concept of "World", she gets confused by big numbers.

Alaska puts most of its energy on the world market and could conceivably supply 20% of the US market if they didn't sell most of it to China.

Assuming that she didn't mean what she said and that she meant only oil excluding all other forms of energy and further assuming that all Alaskan oil production was directed to domestic use:

- Alaskan wells produced 264 million barrels of oil in 2007.
- Total oil supply to the U.S. was over 5.5 billion barrels in 2007.

264e6/5.5e9 = 4.8%

Not insignificant, but not anywhere close to 20%.

29. And just like her "thanks, but no thanks" line
she continues to repeat the "twenty percent" figure in speeches even after it's been debunked.

They're banking on the fact that at least half the public won't bother to check her numbers.

And half is all it will take.

37. Well, I'm not so sure. Look at this table:
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_crd_crpdn_adc_mbbl_a.htm

This says that total U.S. oil production was 1,848,450 thousand barrels, which I believe is 1.848 billion barrels.

Alaska's production was 263,595 thousand barrels, which is 263.5 million barrels.

That's about 14.2% of domestic production.

Then there's another 4.9% of domestic production from offshore Alaska, but I don't know if that can correctly be attributed to Alaska.

I think she said "domestic supply," which I guess can mean domestic production.

46. Apples and oranges
To get that number you have to pretend that all of Alaska's oil production stays in the U.S. which it does not and you have to ignore all U.S. foreign oil imports.

She obviously was wrong by saying "energy" instead of "oil," but she was talking about domestically-produced oil, not imported.

38. In 2007, Alaska apparently produced 14.2% of the U.S. domestic oil
production. About another 4.9% came from offshore Alaska drilling.

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_crd_crpdn_adc_mbbl_a.htm

I don't know where that 3.5% figure came from.

45. I don't think she's showing her stupidity.....
I think she's exploiting the stupidity of Republican voters. Republicans know their idiot voters don't look anything up or work from facts -- their whole campaign tactic (since they have nothing good to run on) is to tell them what they know they want to hear, lie to them and exploit their complete and utter stupidity. No doubt she's a know-nothing idiot, but at least now she knows the real facts and yet she continues to repeat the lie.
