Bolivian governor arrested; Peace Corps evacuates

By DAN KEANE – 2 hours ago

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — President Evo Morales announced Tuesday that soldiers have arrested an opposition governor on suspicion of directing a massacre of the leftist leader's supporters as Bolivia's political crisis continued to unfold.

The political unrest — and the expulsion of the U.S. ambassador — prompted the United States to suspend the Peace Corps program in Bolivia, evacuating its estimated 130 volunteers to neighboring Peru. The Embassy also advised other Americans to leave Bolivia as well if they can.

American Airlines temporarily suspended flights between Miami and Bolivia because of the political unrest.

Morales said soldiers dispatched to the northern province of Pando have detained Governor Leopoldo Fernandez on charges of "genocide" allegedly organizing an armed ambush of pro-Morales demonstrators last week that left at least 15 dead and 37 injured.

9. That's some serious bullshit.

If there's a friendly face of grassroots diplomacy it's the Peace Corps. Of course they send us home first...ruining someone's tour because of politics.

Want to better relations? Send back the assraping corporations that try and squeeze the life out of S. America's poorest nation.

5. The one good thing that's come from the Bush years is
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 03:53 PM by Marr
they've so tied up our military in the middle east that they can't stomp out the democratic movements that have grown in South America.

If the military were available, Venezuela would've been invaded years ago, and a dictatorship installed. The same would be happening in Bolivia now.

8. Was there something preventing them from leaving before?
Or is this supposed to be a free ride out?
