Obama: "I actually knew that Alaska was right next to Russia . . . I saw it on a map."
Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 10:49 PM by bigtree
September 7, 2008

"I actually knew that Alaska was right next to Russia as well," Obama said with a laugh, responding to Republican claims that Palin is more experienced than he is on foreign policy (because of some unknown authority she supposedly exercised over the Alaska National Guard).

"I saw it on a map," he said. And he threw a slightly more indirect jab by bringing up the experience of his own vice presidential nominee. "As somebody who's served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and passed legislation on issues like nuclear proliferation -- and somebody who selected Joe Biden as vice president, who is chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Committee -- I'm going to be happy to have a substantive debate with John McCain about foreign policy," Obama said.

"The strange question is why John McCain insists on continuing to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory," Senator Obama said.

Dismissing the McCain camp's focus on the 2007 troop surge in Iraq and how it had helped reduce violence, Obama said McCain's support to the misadventure was tantamount to giving a "blank check to George Bush".

"If the question is, what was the judgement to be made at the time the surge was put forward -- my choice, and John McCain's choice was, are we going to continue to give an open-ended, blank check to George Bush, without any strategy for political reconciliation?" Obama said.

"My whole premise has always been that it was a distraction for us to go into Iraq," he added.

Sen. Barack Obama said he was "puzzled" when Gov. Sarah Palin scoffed at his early career as a community organizer . . .

"It's curious to me that they would mock that, when I, at least, think that that's exactly what young people should be doing," the Democratic presidential nominee said.

Obama said he "worked with churches, who were dealing with steel plants that had closed in their neighborhoods, to set up job training programs for the unemployed and after-school programs for youth, and to try to deal with asbestos in homes with poor people -- community service work -- which John McCain has been talking about, putting country first and extolling the virtues of national service.

"I would think that's what we want all our young people to do. I would think that that's an area where Democrats and Republicans would agree," Obama said.

"For folks who suddenly have tried to grab the change banner, you know, they've got a very traditional view of what service means," Obama said. "You know, it means, running for office and being a politician, I guess. Or serving in the military. I mean, those are the two options that I think they've talked about.

"I think there are a whole lot of people, young people in particular, who are teaching in under-served schools or working in a hospital in need, you know, volunteering for their community, that think that's part of the change that we need."

4. Young people should aspire to be community organizers?
No, they should be getting pregnant and vandalizing school buses.

5. Don't forget this is the same interview that the freepers are fapping over ...
... Obama says "my Muslim faith" when he meant "my alleged Muslim faith" when answering a question about the GOP pushing their favorite racist lie about him.

They've been bleating about it all day.

7. It's a distraction a day for them..
yesterday it was the flag flap.

Let them waste their time. They can't talk about issues, so they talk about the garbage which no one with an IQ over 5 would care about.

8. If I gave a shit I'd highlight it
I know what he meant, and going on and on about it just feeds into their attempts to lie and distort what he actually said. I'd just as soon drop it.

I didn't and I wouldn't have known it had I not read about it on fark.

We have nothing to hide. We know Obama is not a Muslim (not that there's anything wrong with that).

So, what's the problem?

29. Duh - of course I did - so you are crapping on this thread to tell us about FReepers?
Fucking FReeper morans that take crap out of context and giggle like little fucking grade-schoolers?

You want to distract us from our great candidate to tell us what grade-school pranks the FReeptards are pulling??

...and you imply that I don't know what's going on?

C'mon! Stop thinking we're stupid here. Go back to Free Republic and have some more fun - geez.

They're an irrelevance.

Old people.. Anyhoo... She just couldn't get over how great he was. Oh, he just sounded so good. He had really good answers.. I loved that idea, how do you define success? Its kinda like the Iraq War Vet guy Adam something (I don't know how my Mom knows this guy, perhaps they went more in depth on him in the North?) when he held up the sign at the convention and it said How Do You Win an Occupation... You know its along those same lines.. I think your right, he's pretty good... I'm seriously impressed. Now, she wants a Yard sign. She can't find a local offic in VT, I'll probably have to buy her one now.. She's looking for the freebies that they gave out last time with Kerry/ Edwards.. I'll have to check and see about any offices so she can get the free stuff (old people like the free stuff; they don't like to buy)..

23. That's how most Americans feel about Alaska
For most of us, it's a vast wasteland full of ice and wild animals. Not the "real" America.

26. I haven't heard that from Obama or his campaign
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 09:38 AM by bigtree
I think Alaska is a treasure, despite the large areas of relatively barren landscape. The wildlife is sustenance to the Inuit and others and even most of the barren land is sacred to many Alaskans.

I heard Palin explain why she was in favor of things like taking Polar bears off the endangered list, ignoring the effects of greenhouse gases, and allowing the oil companies to rape the land for profit. She claims that it won't matter if drill in the refuge because most of the area is a 'wasteland,' but she ignores the fact that even the slightest disturbance of that ecosystem will last for generations and generations; such as the effect of the roads they would build to get back and forth from the site and the risks to the environment from potential oil spills. She fails to mention that there's also miles of ocean and coastline native Alaskans use to hunt which are at stake.

I think Alaskans are as American as anyone else and I've never heard anything different from Obama or his camp.

It figures though for republicans to rally around a beauty queen/newscaster and pretend like her ignorance is a virtue.

(I wish she was the one who actually said that . . .)
