Cheney: "The only option for our security and survival is to go on the offensive"

http://www.cnn.com/POLITICS/blogs/politicalticker/2007/03/cheney-troop-withdrawal-would-leave-us.html

<snip>

"If terrorists conclude attacks will change the behavior of a nation, they will attack the nation again and again," he said. "The only option for our security and survival is to go on the offensive ... until our enemy is destroyed."

Cheney said morale among American soldiers in the Middle East is high, and asserted, "America is the kind of country that fights for freedom ... and we will prevail."

He brushed off criticism about faulty U.S. intelligence in the lead-up to the Iraq war and quoted Osama bin Laden as saying a U.S. defeat in Iraq would embolden al Qaeda and other terrorist groups.

"If you support the war on terror, then it only makes sense to support it where the terrorists are fighting us," he said.

1. Cheney's been listening to the voices in his head again.
They get him in trouble every time:

"Call all the energy producers together to outline stragegy before the inauguration. No one will care."
"Tell the Taliban that they either accept and defend the South Asia pipeline, or we'll bomb the hell out of their crappy little country. And tell them we're not afraid of bin Laden."
"Look! That tall man has a quail on his head! Shoot it! SHOOT IT!"
"If Blitzer asks you about Mary again, tell him you'll have his family killed. Live TV? Okay, just glare at him."

2. "If terrorists conclude attacks will change the behavior of a nation, they will attack the nation.."
Guess we're overdue for another attack then, as the aftershocks of 9/11 certainly paved the way for the * junta to "change the behaviour of" our nation. We never had PREEMPTIVE strikes as a foreign policy before. We didn't have gulags, we didn't "disappear" people for torture, we didn't institutionalize torture.... We no longer have Haeous Corpus, we no longer treat people as "innocent until proven guilty", we no longer have an openess and transparency in our government.

3. How is an occupation considered an offensive?
Our troops are nothing but targets. We aren't on the offensive we're hunkered down. We can't move around without using armored vehicles and air cover.

5. How's your bottom line doing, Dick?
You getting your fair share of Halliburton's $2.3BB profits? Poor Dick, always confusing his personal security with our national xsecurity interests. If we'd rid ourselves of warmongers/war-profiteers like Dick Cheney, the WOT would be over tomorrow.

8. y'know....
This gang is either really shameless or the American public is dumber than I thought.

Both Cheney and Bush have recently quoted Bin Laden (and have been doing so for several years) and one would think that they'd be too shamed to do so, given their utter failure to capture the REAL threat to our security. But no, they quote him simply to frighten a gullible, ill-informed public.

I'd love to be in the audience when Bush/Cheney pull these Bin Laden quotes out of their asses and scream, "SO, JUST WHERE IS HE?". Or scream, "TORA BORA". It just never fails to amaze me when they do this.

13. Uh...
The kneejerk leap to war in the wake of 9/11 is as clear an example of "terrorists changing our behavior" as you're ever likely to find, to say nothing of the 24/7 FEARFEARFEAR media blitz that's been in place ever since.

Cheney commits the double sin of over-simplifying the situation and also omitting at least one other viable option:

We should maintain a policy in spite of terrorist attack if and only if that policy is wholly independent of the reason for the attack or the policy is sound and legitimate in its own right. To maintain a disastrous policy for any reason is folly, no less so if we maintain it simply to show terrorists that we're the baddest asses on the block.

The other option is to maintain our lifestyle and recognize that the only thing that really changed on 9/11 is that we were awakened from our complacency. If we all scurry into our own undisclosed locations, then we've sent an unambiguous message that we're a cowardly nation unable to interact with the harsh realities of the real world and wholly unmindful of the real horrors loose in that world.

What a surprise that Cheney either misses or pretends to miss the point once again.

I wonder--will his deferred comp checks no come with a Dubai postmark?

16. Spoken like a true psychopath.....
this isn't some armchair quarterback football we're talking about here, slippery Dick. These are actual human beings without the benefit of 5 deferments to keep them out of harm's way, slippery Dick. Yes, they'll fight for freedom....OUR freedom, but to ask them to fight endlessly for someone else's freedom, someone who doesn't seem to want to fight for this freedom themselves is asking a bit much of our troops, isn't it slippery Dick? Yes, slippery Dick, you talk a good game with someone else's kids and you're making a few thousand TONS of money off this never ending war, but it has to end sometime. Whether it ends now or ten years from now, the outcome will be the same. How much money can you spend, slippery Dick? How much is enough?

Slippery Dick has lost all contact with reality, he has. :eyes:
