DU fathers of daughters. I believe some ass kicking is in order.
OK, I'm a geezer.
Call me old fashioned.

But if some 18 year old macho-wannabe peach-fuzz jock had just knocked up my beautiful 17 year old daughter I do believe the very last thing I would consider doing is inviting him to join me and my family at a national, high profile, media circus spotlight, political/social/party gathering.
Gee, let me pick up your hotel room.
I can probably get the convention discount.
Or will you be bunking in with Bristol?

The first thing I would want to do is kick his ass.
Then I might kick my daughter's ass.
OK, I couldn't do that. But there would be some very stern words.
Tears would be shed.
Not all mine.

Later, if they really want to, they can get married...I guess.
Shotgun weddings have a history of disintegrating early on.
:grr:

2. Juno's dad had the right reaction.
"I'd like to punch that punk in his weiner"

But seriously, if my daughter really loved the guy, I'd have to respect her terrible, immature decision. The thought of my 18 year old having sex makes me worried, but not really angry.

11. I wouldn't
I wouldn't have to respect any decision my kid made beyond not terminating the pregnancy. By having unprotected sex, she's already demonstrated that her decision-making skills are as bad as John McCains. That kid would be kept under wraps for as long as necessary, and I'd be fucked if I'd let that boy be marched out on stage at a political convention as if he's some kind of hero instead of a dumb jock who was too stupid to use a condom.

These people are just disgusting.

18. There you go!!!
Actually, the truth is that I'd hammer that kid right into the abortion clinic. I'd like to think I'd be understanding and supportive, but the reality of the situation - 17 years old, idiot jock boyfriend - would leave no other choice but termination.

You're good. Thank you.

34. Whaddya mean, "dumb jock too stupid to use a condom". It's the WORD OF GOD:
On Monday, the church had another cause for notoriety. Kroons told NEWSWEEK that Palin's campaign staff had contacted him that morning to ask for his discretion when discussing the pregnancy of Palin's teenage daughter Bristol. "All I'll say is that Bristol is a young lady. We care about her and want to support her and the family," Kroons said. Ashley Brown, another pastor at the church, said he'd also been contacted by the campaign with the same request. Teenage pregnancy "is not so uncommon up here," adds Brown. "It's easier to accept in Alaska. Maybe it's part of Alaska mentality. In many ways, you raise your kids to assume a lot more responsibilities, than people do around the nation at an earlier age." If a teenager came to him asking for contraceptives, he said he would send the teen home to have a talk with the parents. According to 2000 data from the Guttmacher Institute, Alaska ranks 30th in teen pregnancy nationwide. Nevada, Arizona and Mississippi had the highest rates. (A Palin spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment).

8. This sort of thing could be comparable to the high divorce rates of
southern baptists and southerners. They tend to marry young, frequently shotgun weddings. High divorce rates.

9. Some thoguhts from a daughter....
I suppose if my bf (now hubby) and I had gotten preggers in HS my parents would have been very upset, but they love my guy so I don't think they woulda done much more than rant and rave about how we screwed up our plans for college. Now _his_ family would have really lost it. He's the son of a conservative evangelical minister.

Knowing my mindset back then, I probably would have chosen to get married and keep the baby. Not due to parental or religious pressure but because we always knew we would get married anyway.

Still, it was hard as heck getting used to being married at 21, and at 26 it was _really_ hard dealing with babies. I don't know if we could have survived a teenage marriage and family. :( If that is what is truly in store for Bristol and her boyfriend, I wish them luck. It'll be a tough row to hoe.

14. My daughter married her high school sweetheart.
I don't know what intimate behavior might have occurred between them back then, and I don't want to know or think about that.

In any event, she remained unpregnant until 3 years AFTER they were married, AFTER she had graduated from college, and AFTER he had graduated from law school 3 years later, and AFTER he had gotten relatively well established in his practice.

During his time in law school and until they married, they co-habitated.
I was OK with that as long as I didn't dwell on 'details'.
:-)

Frankly, I was amazed (but pleased) that their relationship survived 4 years at different colleges.

I liked him from the get go, when he was 15 years old and first appeared at our dinner table.

I still do.

22. Your daughter had smart parents
who did not brainwash her into believing that love and sex were dirty things. She was not prevented from having a high school boyfriend so they were sensible and made the right decisions.

I have no scientific data but my impression is that boyfriends and sex are like alcohol to teenagers. The more you ban them, the more kids want them. The stricter the parents, the sooner the pregnancy.

27. Thanks. And I guess she agrees.
We have a very close relationship.
When she was growing up, especially her teen years, Miz t. and I had long and serious talks about how much slack to cut her.

Too much and there's bound to be trouble.
Too little and you get a repressed kid who can't wait to kick over the traces once they get away from home.
And again, there's bound to be trouble.

At 37, she says "I think you guys gave me just enough rope."
Aw, man? That's what you like to hear.

10. I was monumentally pissed at my step-daughter when she got pregnant at 17.
I wanted to snap the scrawny father of her baby right in two.

But then, my grandson was born. He's the most beautiful human being I have ever seen, and I would brave the fires of Hell rather than have him suffer any harm. Love is a crazy thing, no doubt...

Go ahead, though, and pile on the Palin family; they've got it coming, the hypocrites. :hide:

23. I have been a teen aged boy.
And I was lucky.
Possibly extremely lucky.
I could talk the horns off a billy goat and the birds out of the trees.
And I guess that's about as deep as I want to get into that.

Yes, it takes two to tango.
But I would be angry with both of them.
And feel I had failed in my daughter's upbringing.

31. Well that's completely insane
You're a geezer.

Teens are having sex. You don't have to be happy about that, but it's happening anyway. If I had children and one of them got pregnant unexpectedly, I'd at least have the stones to admit that it takes two people to make this sort of thing happen and your "beautiful 17 month old daughter" was just as responsible as the 18 year old macho wannabe jock.

I'd also bet that there's probably no faster way to drive off you own daughter than to threaten her boyfriend because teens are passionate about that sort of thing...often dumb, but passionate.

So your plan is to chew out your daughter and make her cry while she tries to deal with this life altering event instead of showing some degree of support?

That'll over well.

32. If I did not like the guy and thought he was a loser...
I would have discouraged my daughter from dating him in the first place. At 17 I know teens are going to fuck and think about marriage so I would prefer her fuck and marry I guy I can live with for the next 40 years.

33. I knew my daughter was having sex at seventeen...
But she had been thoroughly trained in birth control methods by her mother and no unfortunate pregnancies resulted.

I wasn't thrilled about it but I remembered what both her mother and myself were doing at a similar age and just couldn't be that big a hypocrite.

Now I have to worry about my two granddaughters, both of whom are going to be "boy magnets" because they are quite attractive.

I'm just hoping they are getting the same training my daughter did.
