34. Gee.. and they wasted all the SWAT raids...
... wasted all that un-constitutional military sweep of the college kids. And what will they do with all the extra barbed wire from the free speech zones? Maybe they can get some of the Blackwater guys to come up from N.O. and they can play war games.. pretend like they are in Iraq.... you know.. rough a few people up... push some women and kids around. Great fun.

I don't know if the RNC was expecting a huge crowd but the "Cities" have been in high gear. I can imagine this will be a huge loss. Are least their NAZI poice got some practice. This is from a former Minnesota resident who loves the state but I can't believe what I've been hearing from there.

According to their website, there were 34 speakers/participants scheduled for Monday alone. I doubt that they all copped out.

11. as someone who lives in hurricane-prone central FL, my thoughts are with those Gustav will harm.
At the same time, this really doesn't hurt the republicans so much, in that is lessens direct scrutiny of their abominable selections for both P and VP. Their entire convention was starting to fall apart without help from Gustav, and now neither mccain nor palin will have to come up huge in a major televised speech.

Again, my real concern is with those in the path of the hurricane. It would be unseemly for the republicans to be seen partying while the gulf coast is so dramatically battered. I applaud their decision, but hopefully the voters will have an opportunity very soon to examine their policies.

Oh sure sure sure "my friend."
Of course our first thoughts are with victims of Gustav that are being evacuated from NO and surrounding costal areas. Anyone with even half a heart knows that is a given. They apparently can't do two things at once. The convention could have been conducted with reverence toward that ideal. I guess the remaining three paid attendees cancelled.

40. I think this will help the repugs from a purely campaign perspective
Like you stated, it will take away the scrutiny of Palin and the other repug policies as well as give them an out with Bush. Bush has an excuse not to be there and they can claim this is the beginning of a NEW administration.

I think they will try and introduce Palin to voters as a take charge VP candidate who is down in the Gulf Coast. The narrative on Katrina has always been that the Repugs were unable to do anything about it. This could be seen as a "do over" with Mccain and Palin positioning themselves as the new repugs who step up and take charge.

18. my guess is that the City of Minneapolis is non too happy
about this - they are going to lose millions.

Also and in all honesty this big show of concern for the folks in the gulf coast just reinforces to me just how badly they responded to Katrina. If FEMA had actually done their job in 2005, and Katrina was not such a clusterfuck, I am sure the republican party would have been able to confidently go on with their convention. This is nothing more than a big fat phony show of concern. They failed when it mattered the first time. Do they actually think they get to be forgiven if they actually do their jobs correctly this time around?

And seriously, I am sick of seeing McFlippy all over the tv playing at commander in chief.

39. McCain Katrina Record
via that link:

"Mccain voted against the Katrina Commission to hold the Bush Administration accountable for their disastrous non-handling of the previous hurricane. He voted against extending unemployment benefits to Katrina victims. He voted against Medicaid for Katrina victims. He voted against funding the Army Corps of Engineers. He sought and received the endorsement of Pastor John Hagee after Hagee said Katrina was God's punishment against New Orleans. And finally, McCain celebrated his birthday with his bff George Bush and a big cake the very minute that Katrina was destroying New Orleans."

50. You know what's rich about all this? Focus on the Family Dobson started a prayer chain
praying that a thunderstorm would break out after Obama's speech - I guess a message from God. But look what we got instead - a hurricane heading towards New Orleans that serves to remind all of us of one of the biggest failures of this Republican admin and the people who supported it. Maybe there is a God.
