(John) Edwards is returning to public eye -- for a price
URBANA, ILL. - Less than a month after John Edwards admitted having an extramarital affair, the University of Illinois said the two-time presidential candidate has agreed to speak on campus in October.

And according to the university, an Edwards representative said the former North Carolina senator is looking to add to his public speaking load.

University spokeswoman Robin Kaler said Thursday that a student group has booked Edwards to speak Oct. 14 on "The American Dream." Tickets are free, but the student group is paying Edwards $65,000.

5. It's only because I turned it down
I'm a failed, disgraced presidential candidate who only thinks about sex too. And that was actually how I wrote it in my platform too.

7. "Tickets are free, but the student group is paying Edwards $65,000."
To paraphrase Ace: If I thought any of those asshole student groups had $65K, I'd join them to steal the money" What fucking student group is this that they can shell out 65 large?

9. There's nothing extraordinary about the price tag.
What will be extraordinary is if Edwards doesn't cancel this event. I thought he would cancel all public speaking gigs until after the election.

14. Bill Mahr's line about Edwards:
Edwards brought us the concept of "Two Americas." But apparently in one of them he's single.

10. His gigs will be few and far between.
He got on the express train to oblivion with his dalliance. He is the new Gary Hart.

13. Actually he is NOT the new Gary Hart
Hart is a very knowledgeable man with excellent national security credentials. It was the Hart/Rudman report on terrorism that was written in early 2001 that Bush ignored. He now heads a prestigious bipartisan think tank on National Security - that has on its board people like John Kerry.

The best possibility for Edwards is to end up in Hart's position on, say, poverty.

Hart also had a real chance to become President that was derailed by his affair. Edwards won just one primary in two cycles before the affair was known, The chance that he would have run in a third cycle was infinitesimal. He had difficulty raising money the second time and gradually lost the media's favor which he had in 2004.

16. At $65K a hit, the only way he is going to maintain any credibility on
poverty issues is to donate at least half of his take to caring for those in poverty.

11. No wall yet
As much as what many people are saying, I still don't think that Edward's "scandal" would spell the end for him.

The media outrage over his affair is, in my opinion, kind of petty.
