Marine Corps recruiter accused of sex with minor

Associated Press

A Marine Corps recruiter is facing charges of unlawful sex with a minor and unlawful communication with a minor for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old girl he met at a high school job fair.

Lincoln Police Lt. Paul Shelgren said Sgt. Victor Sanchez-Millan, 23, of Stockton, was arrested Wednesday at a recruiting station in Sacramento County.

Sanchez-Millan chatted with the girl on MySpace and by cell phone, Shelgren said.

Police began investigating after the girl's father reported his concerns. The father said the family has a strong military background and the girl was sincerely interested in joining the Marines.

Marine Corps officials are conducting their own review to determine if Sanchez-Millan violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Marine spokesman Gunnery Sgt. J.D. Cress said. He said Sanchez-Millan has been suspended from his recruiting duties.

2. Wow - if found guilty he should be locked up for a very long time.
The USMC better not try to sweep this under the rug.

3. Hope I don't get flamed for this but....
He's 23 right? Not really a big deal imo, at least not a deal big enough to get arrested for. I don't know if the fact that he's a Marine recruiter makes it more serious, but 23-year-olds shouldn't be locked up for sex with 17-year-olds.

9. UCMJ is a very strict code of conduct
Nothing like civilian laws. Anyone who is a member of the military is subject to UCMJ laws above and beyond any civilian laws. Adultery is not a crime for a civilian, it is a crime for servicemen and women. He is in some serious hot water now, and it is his own fault. Also recruiters have their own separate codes of conduct that they must follow, which includes restrictions on personal relationships with your potential accessions.

13. You're a child the day before you're 18 and then spring fully formed into adulthood?
Well, I guess. If that's what the legislature says.

11. This should not be illegal.

Banning 17-year-olds from having sex with 23-year-olds is stupid.

OTOH, given that this was a law and he broke it, he should probably be disciplined even though he hasn't done anything wrong in itself.

Even though this may not be a breach of ethics, it's a breach of professional ethics (a clumsy way of putting it, but I hope it's clear what I mean).
