My deepest sympathies go out to the family of Bill Gwatney, the chairman of the Arkansas Democratic party, who was shot and fatally wounded in his Little Rock office this morning. My thoughts, as well as the thoughts of millions of Americans, are with them during this sad time.

It is always upsetting to be reminded of the fact that we still live in a society where there are people who choose to settle their disagreements with weapons instead of words. The diversity of beliefs is a gift to be celebrated, not a burden to lament. We must always remember that regardless of our race, religion, gender, or political affiliation, we are all Americans, and we are all family.

One of the first reactions to the news came from Hillary Clinton in a joint statement with her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away," the statement reads. "His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

Earlier in the day, Presidential hopeful Barack Obama released the following statement.

"I was shocked and saddened to hear about the tragedy in Arkansas," Barack Obama said in a statement. "We're all grateful for the quick action of law enforcement and quick thinking by Chairman Gwatney's staff, and Michelle and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers."
