Gingrich's Views on Slayings Draw Fire

Speaker Newt Gingrich's remarks blaming the "welfare state" for the murder of an Illinois woman and two of her children drew criticism today from relatives of the victims and from Democrats. Speaking to Republican governors in New Hampshire on Tuesday, Mr. Gingrich said: "Let's talk about what the welfare state has created. Let's talk about the moral decay of the world the left is defending."

With a newspaper account in his hand, he told of the killing last week of Debra Evans, whose assailants slashed open her abdomen, removed her unborn child and also killed her 10-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. Two men and a woman have been charged with murdering Ms. Evans because they wanted a baby.

"What's gone wrong is a welfare system which subsidizes people for doing nothing," Mr. Gingrich said, "a criminal system which tolerated drug dealers, an educational system which allows kids to not learn and which rewards tenured teachers who can't teach while destroying poor children who are trapped in a process with no hope."

In the Chicago suburb of Roselle, relatives of Ms. Evans who had gathered for her funeral at the Keeneyville Bible Church denounced Mr. Gingrich. "It's terrible to use this for politics," said Sam Evans, the father of the murdered woman. "It's an outrage."

Her mother, Jacalyn Arnold, said: "The people who did this were sick. Debra was on welfare, but she was one of the most caring people in the world. Even though she was on welfare, she opened her house to people. She gave other people food when she didn't have much."

Mr. Gingrich's remarks were reminiscent of an interview he gave to The Associated Press just before the 1994 election in which he spoke of the widely publicized case in which two children had been drowned by their mother, Susan Smith. "I think the mother killing her two children in South Carolina vividly reminds every American how sick society is getting and how much we have to have change," he said at the time. "I think people want to change, and the only way you can get change is to vote Republican."

This is the guy who literally wrote the manual on extreme partisanship, and every Republican left who likes to think they have an ounce of decency left in them should be reminded how loathesome Gingrich is, how AMORAL, and be pushed to denounce him. (Democrats have been called to denounce people for less. It's their turn.)
