Published Sunday, August 03, 2008
Members of the Phelps family awoke to flames early Saturday.

Topeka firefighters were dispatched to Westboro Baptist Church, 3701 S.W. 12th St., at 1:05 a.m. A fence and garage were engulfed in flames.

Anthony S. Bush / The Capital-Journal
Topeka firefighters extinguish a fire at 1:20 a.m. Saturday in a garage on property owned by the Phelps family of Westboro Baptist Church at 3701 S.W. 12th St. The fire originated on the outside.

Lucas Mark and his girlfriend, Monique Webster, were in the drive-through of McDonald's at S.W. Huntoon and Gage when they noticed flames in the east. They drove toward the flames and ended up at the church.

"We called 911," Webster said. "My boyfriend knocked on the door."

Mark notified an occupant that their garage was on fire.

9. Huh?
It was a man and his girlfriend. Why would Phelps call him a sinner? I mean, he probably WOULD, but based on what's reported in the story, why would you think that?

24. I don't, Phelps would
Two unmarried people walking alone at night? With his twisted mind (and a lot of people just like him) he'd be thinking "sin".

4. Believe me, they LOVE this publicity,
However, it must hurt their feelings knowing that even God doesn't give a shit about them considering he didn't feel like protecting them from this. lol

11. Question for Kansans here
Phelps travels the country to picket and spread his hate.

Does anyone ever picket at Phelps residence or "church"? I would think pickets at the Phelp's front door would be a regular feature in that neighborhood.

16. He always seems to be out of the state doing his picketing
I'd think if you showed up at his house or church to picket there'd be no one there

Given the multi-million judgment against the family, plus the http://www.kmbc.com/news/16998669/detail.html">recent ruling that they must pay taxes on the truck they use to drive to protests, maybe the haters need some extra cash nowadays.

22. Tsk tsk tsk
I guess they learned the hard way to burn their crosses outside and downwind of structures.

Note in this picture the haters are standing UPWIND of the burning cross, keeping their whites free from ash, sparks, and smoke. And note that the area downwind of their burning cross is free of flammable wood structures, storage tanks of propane or gasoline, or other such items.

I will fault them for not having a fire extinguisher handy, though.

23. What you had there was a natural and spiritual phenomenon.
A critical mass of hate was finally reached, and poof.

There should be a discovery one day of the element "E."

It will be the heaviest known and waaaaay radioactive.

You damage yourself as much when you handle it as you do

giving it to someone.
