We Just Won Alaska Begich Senator
Justice Department indicts Sen. Ted Stevens
The long-serving Alaska senator is up for re-election this year
NBC News
updated 10:05 a.m. PT, Tues., July. 29, 2008
WASHINGTON - U.S. officials say the Justice Department has indicted Alaska Senator Ted Stevens on charges related to a long-running investigation of business dealings in Alaska.

Stevens, who has served in the U.S. Senate for 40 years, is up for re-election this year, and Democrats view his seat as one of their top pick-up opportunities.

His Democratic challenger is Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich.

However, before the general election, Stevens must survive a GOP primary that occurs on August 26.

The Cook Political Report labels the Alaska Senate race as a "toss up."

:woohoo: :hi:

July 29 (Bloomberg) --

Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, the longest serving Republican in the U.S. Senate, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington on charges of hiding hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts he received.

Stevens, 84, was charged with seven counts of making false statements on his Senate financial disclosure forms from 1999 to 2006 about gifts and renovations on his house.

Stevens's indictment boosts Democratic chances of winning an Alaska Senate seat for the first time in almost three decades, if he remains a candidate. ``If Stevens is on the ballot I would expect Democrats to win the seat,'' said Nathan Gonzales of the Rothenberg Political Report.

Stevens ``knowingly and willfully engaged in a scheme to conceal'' his receipt of ``hundreds of thousands of dollars'' of gifts from Veco Corp., an oil-field engineering firm, and its chief executive officer, the indictment said.

The gifts included improvements on a home in Alaska, new vehicles, furniture and a professional Viking gas grill, according to court papers.

Stevens used ``his official position and his office on behalf of Veco,'' the indictment said.

Surprised are you?

I am surprised it has taken this long to out the corruption that has been taking place in this great state for so many years. I no longer live in Alaska but spent a great deal of my 67 years there. I was saddened to see so many Alaskan's brainwashed by the conservative corruption movement. Now you need to out Ben, Lisa, Frank and the other corrupt politicians in the state and return Alaska to grea ...

So am I to understand some of you right

Just because Teddy has done so much for Alaska we should turn out heads on this? I think the bigger question is...how do you think he got us so much? Was it gained with good ethics or corruption and what does this say about all of us if we support that? You don't honestly believe that this is ALL there is that could be considered "questionable" do you? I have tried to stand behind my party but a ...

Sen. Stevens

Why after do they file the month before the primary election? If the feds had evidence why did they not come forward when it came to light? Why don't they investigate Mark Begich and his felon best friend Bill Bobrick. It is a sad day for Alaska. Sen. Stevens is a great WWII veteran who had hangers on who had bad intentions. It looks to me if he were paying attention to people around him this ne ...

CHANGE THE NAME OF THE AIRPORT!!

See this is what happens when you name something after somebody in government who hasn't passed away yet. The name of our airport is a disgrace and complete embarassment to the people of Anchorage. I hope he is found guilty of ALL CHARGES. That would be the icing on the cake for me. How long has this dirty playing been going on? And people still voted for him because of his fear tactics the pulled ...

What ever happened

to innocent until proven guilty?? Way to many of you seem to have already convicted Sen. Stevens. I feel very grateful for all that he has done for our state. And I will vote for him. I think this is just a hugh political move to make us all think he is guilty and get their democrate in office. What a shame they have resorted to this kind of behavior and so many of you are falling for it. Th ...

10. That is assuming that Stevens is the Republican nominee
He has to win his primary next month. GOP primary voters threw out Murkowski two years ago.
