8. Happy birthday! And some lyrics you may not know:
In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

And his messages are as meaningful today as they were when he put them to music. A great American.

9. I play one of his songs in my acoustic set.
Changed a few words here and there.

All You Fascists Bound to Lose

I'm gonna tell all you fascists, now you may be surprised
The people in this world are getting organized
You're bound to lose, you fascists bound to lose

Your racism won't stop us, that's one thing that I know
Your corporate greed and wars for profit have got to go
You're bound to lose, you fascists bound to lose

All you fascists bound to lose, you fascists bound to lose
All you fascists bound to lose
You're bound to lose! You fascists bound to lose

People from every nation gonna be marching side by side
Marching 'cross those fields where a million fascists died
You're bound to lose, you fascists bound to lose

I'm going into this battle, gonna use my "reason" gun
We'll end this world of slavery before this battle's won
You're bound to lose, you fascists bound to lose

All you fascists GONNA lose, you goddamned motherfucking fascists, you're gonna fucking lose!
All you fascists gonna lose
You're gonna lose! You fascists gonna lose

15. This union maid was wise to the tricks of company spies
She couldn't be fooled by a company stool, she'd always organize the guys
She always got her way when she struck for better pay
She'd show her card to the National Guard
And this is what she'd say

Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union

17. funny story about "Union Maid" . . .
seems that Woody was performing at some union function or other when a couple of ladies approached him and asked if he'd write a song about the union's ladies auxiliary . . .

"I already did," says Woody. "It's called 'Union Maid.'"

"Oh, that's a good song, Mr. Guthrie," says one of the women. "But it doesn't mention the words 'ladies auxiliary.'"

So right on the spot, Woody sang them the following . . .

"Oh the Ladies Auxiliary
It's a good auxiliary,
It's the best auxiliary
That you ever did see.

So if you need an auxiliary
Try the Ladies Auxiliary,
That's the La-dies
Aux-il-a-reee."

the ladies, so the story goes, were very pleased . . . :applause:

16. Dear Mrs. Roosevelt, don't hang your head and cry
His mortal clay is laid away, but his good work fills the sky
This world was lucky to see him born ...

He helped to build my union hall, he learned me how to talk
I could see he was a cripple but he learned my soul to walk
This world was lucky to see him born

You Nazis and you fascists tried to boss this world by hate
He fought my war the union way and the hate gang all got beat
This world was lucky to see him born
