Tucker Carlson thinks Coulter makes "great TV," says Edwards needs to lighten up
Edited on Tue Mar-06-07 07:37 PM by marmar
From MediaMatters:

Carlson on Coulter: "We're always happy to have her on"; "She's great TV"
On the March 5 edition of MSNBC's Tucker, while discussing right-wing pundit Ann Coulter's recent reference to former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) as a "faggot," host Tucker Carlson claimed: "She called me one, too!" Carlson continued: "Unlike John Edwards, I'm not pretending I'm a victim or (that) I've been slurred, or I didn't cry, actually, after she called me that," adding: "I'm not (gay), by the way." He then told MSNBC political analyst Pat Buchanan and Democratic strategist Peter Fenn that "we're always happy to have her on" and that "she's great TV." Carlson added that Coulter "makes smart points" and is "courageous," and he also described her as "a very talented writer" and a "great stylist." While Buchanan asserted that Coulter sometimes "goes over the line ... no doubt about it," he said: "Let me speak up for Ann. I do think she's a very, very courageous individual. She's written some of these books -- I mean, one of the few people that came out and defended the late, great tail-gunner Joe McCarthy."

As Media Matters for America documented, Coulter called former Vice President Al Gore a "total fag" on the July 27, 2006, edition of MSNBC's Hardball, claiming immediately that the comment was "a joke." Like Carlson, at the end of the interview, host Chris Matthews said: "Thanks for coming on. And a smart lady. ... Sometimes being smart isn't enough for a civil discourse. We'd love to have her back."

From the March 5 edition of MSNBC's Tucker:

CARLSON: Well, actually, you know, it's funny. I just pulled this today, because I was remembering this. She called me one, too! In 2002 -- I checked the date. It was exactly one month after my fourth child was born, and she implied I was gay in an interview to The New York Observer. I can't exactly remember what the predicate for it was. I'm not, by the way.

FENN: You needed 10 children. You needed 10 children in order to not --

CARLSON: This is clearly a psychological --

FENN: She's got a problem.

CARLSON: OK, here's the point I'm making

BUCHANAN: Right.

CARLSON: I'm obviously -- unlike John Edwards, I'm not pretending I'm a victim or I've been slurred, or I didn't cry, actually, after she called me that. But, like, who cares what she says? I guess that's kind of my point.

BUCHANAN: Well, let me say this. Let me speak up for Ann. I do think she's a very, very courageous individual. She's written some of these books -- I mean, one of the few people that came out and defended the late, great tail-gunner Joe McCarthy. I mean, really --

FENN: Ah-ha.

CARLSON: It takes .........

6. Maybe Tucker needs to "lighten up."
Edited on Tue Mar-06-07 07:30 PM by Clark2008
Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson, host of Tucker and formerly of Crossfire fame, has recently gone out of his way to see that a D.C. video store had a cclerk fired after discovering the clerk commented on Carlson in his blog. The termination followed a tense encounter at the store, during which Carlson threatened to "f*cking destroy" the clerk.

There's nothing worse than a meglamaniacal bird-beeked, bowtie-wearing prick with bad ratings.

10. "She called me one, too!"
Really, Mr. Carlson. And what office were you running for when that happened? And do you think such puerile name-calling really has a place when the country is trying to choose a successor to the train wreck of man whose administration has been bungling us into its worst catastrophes ever? We've seen the inevitable outcome of such childishness, and it isn't very good for our country, its society, its standing in the world or its citizens. Do you think your seven figure annual salary will remain proof against the repercussions forever? Are you really, really sure?

Grow up, Mr. Carlson.

talk about that? And courage is going on a legitimate show with someone not in her corner, she's a coward, afraid of the liberals that will eviscerate her little little 1950's white supremacist mind.

republicans run off at the mouth, claiming outrageous things or by saying "democRAT", and when the person being demeaned, says ANYTHING, they claim they are being 'thin skinned, need to lighten up or whatever",,

If the person says nothing, republicans claim' WELL, it has not been refuted, so it muct be okay/true..

Offense is where points are scored, no matter how ugly the play is..

Democrats have played defense so long, they/we have allowed this idiocy to continue to the art-form it is now.

16. Excellent point, the only way to beat them at this stupid childish game is
to call her out on her hypocrisy. Bait her bait her all day long...why won't you talk about your being a bigot and chicken shit Ann? Why won't you talk about plagiarism in your books? Why won't you talk about not being married? Why won't you talk about not having children and living your subservient little lifestyle you spout about regarding other liberals? Seems to me you could be the leader of NOW. Did she ever have an abortion? Ask her directly! Did she ever have premarital sex out of wedlock? Has she been sleeping with Hannity? Rush? Ask these questions and divert it all back to her ugly scarecrow face.

20. Hate speech, whether by tv talking heads or by schoolkids on a playground,
should not be the occasion for praise, but should be condemned by anyone interested in a civil society respectful of others' differences.

Edwards' campaign pivoted off Coulter's bigotry with a fundraising initiative -- a proactive response and a deft strategy. Do it again, Ann. Our accountants stand ready.

I wouldn't look to Tucker Carlson (or most of his guests) for fair treatment of Democrats.

27. Fag. That's actually not a very nice word to use.
I am looking forward to the social scales tipping until people will not feel comfortable using it. I get discouraged, though, when progressive people are still using it. Makes me feel like it will be with us for a long time.

I hope you understand what I mean, and that you will think about pruning it from your vocabulary.

28. Someone should say that "Faggots like Tucker who wear bow ties"...
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 09:16 AM by calipendence
and some other derisive statement afterwards, and see how he feels afterward.

Someone could then try and give some stupid rationalization, like she did with the "schoolyard taunt" BS, that most people that wear bow ties are gay (even though that can't be proven and of course for us, that distinction, whether or not true, shouldn't make any difference to us). That person, though I probably wouldn't care for that line of thinking, could also rationalize like he has been, that their logic is all "intelligent", etc. and couch it with some other stuff that Tucker would call "conspiracy thinking" but that we feel is more "intelligent speak", and then see how he feels when we point out that the other things that are said are intelligent, and using his rationale, we should ignore the rants and just look for the substance, as he advocates we do with Ann, even if we all pretty much agree that the rest of what she spews is also BS too where he doesn't.

24. OK, enough with the "she said was a 'joke'"
The comment about Gore was freakin' joke, OK, no quotes necessary. I've heard clips of it; somebody asked her if she was saying Bill Clinton was gay, and she replied with something like, "No...but Al Gore, total fag," laughing as she said it. That's as close to wit as you're going to get out of that woman. The Edwards crack was a similar attempt at humor.

One of the things that really sucks about the dreckier dregs of the MSM (MSNBC, I'm talking about you) is the humorless, faux-objective way they cover entertainers like Al Franken, or half-assed "entertainers" like Coulter. Coulter's books, unlike Franken's, are not meant to be funny; they're fucking nuts and downright evil. But a lot of her wackier public statments ARE attempted jokes, and anyone hearing them recognizes them as such.

It just dissipates proper criticism of her when news stories characterize her tacky jokes as "controversial statements," putting them on the same plane as the insane raving she puts in her books and columns.

29. Tucker has been especially "little mr. young republican" lately.
Yesterday he spent most of his show talking about this wonderful administration and all of the positive things they have accomplished. I sat open mouthed wondering what planet he was visiting this week. I think it's time for Tucker to get another Jon Stewart butt whipping. Last time that happened it deflated his overblown ego for several months, but obviously that didn't last. And no, I don't watch Tucker on a regular basis, but the other channels were doing the rape/murder trial story, and I refuse to add to their ratings.

30. "who cares what she says? I guess that's kind of my point."
No one would care if the GOP media machine didn't keep thrusting her in front of us. That's really the issue here is not what she says but how she's able to continue to get her stupidity on the public airwaves and into print. Meanwhile liberals with far more gravitas are routinely labeled as kooks and extremists and shunned by the national media.
