Iran In The Crosshairs:
As Fears Of An Air Strike Increase, Little Opposition Is Heard

By Ira Glunts

When the United States invaded Iraq in order to destroy a nonexistent nuclear threat there were national and world protests. Opposition to that war was loudly voiced by American politicians and world leaders, as well as in mass demonstrations across the globe. Despite the protests, the war proceeded as planned. Today it seems that it is generally agreed that the Iraq invasion and subsequent occupation were catastrophic mistakes.

Now the same people that gave us Iraq and remain just about the only supporters of their own failed policy there, are signaling that it is necessary to destroy the Iranian nuclear threat. And again, one problem is that this threat may not exist.

This time, however, the opponents of the threatened attack are surprisingly few, even as the signs of a coming air assault on Iran continue to increase. This lack of articulated opposition to military action against Iran, especially by members of the Democratic party and their supporters, increase the chances that the Bush/Cheney administration will widen the war in the Middle East either directly or by using Israel as a proxy.

“Israelis are mounting a full court press to get the Bush administration to strike Iran's nuclear complex,” according to David Martin of CBS News. Martin quotes Michael Oren, a CBS analyst, who is an American-born Israeli and well-connected to his government’s reliable sources, as stating, “he Israelis have been assured by the Bush administration that the Bush administration will not allow Iran to nuclearize .”

While Israel pressures the Americans via diplomatic and military channels, the U.S. Congress will shortly give its overwhelming support to two identical non-binding resolutions which will demand that President Bush impose a military blockade on Iran. H.Con Res. 362, the House version, and S.Res. 580, the Senate version, demand.

Preparing The Battlefield

By Seymour M. Hersh

29 June,2008
The New Yorker

The Bush Administration steps up its secret moves against Iran.

Late last year, Congress agreed to a request from President Bush to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran, according to current and former military, intelligence, and congressional sources. These operations, for which the President sought up to four hundred million dollars, were described in a Presidential Finding signed by Bush, and are designed to destabilize the country’s religious leadership. The covert activities involve support of the minority Ahwazi Arab and Baluchi groups and other dissident organizations. They also include gathering intelligence about Iran’s suspected nuclear-weapons program.

Clandestine operations against Iran are not new. United States Special Operations Forces have been conducting cross-border operations from southern Iraq, with Presidential authorization, since last year. These have included seizing members of Al Quds, the commando arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and taking them to Iraq for interrogation, and the pursuit of “high-value targets” in the President’s war on terror, who may be captured or killed. But the scale and the scope of the operations in Iran, which involve the Central Intelligence Agency and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), have now been significantly expanded, according to the current and former officials. Many of these activities are not specified in the new Finding, and some congressional leaders have had serious questions about their nature.

Under federal law, a Presidential Finding, which is highly classified, must be issued when a covert intelligence operation gets under way and, at a minimum, must be made known to Democratic and Republican leaders in the House and the Senate and to the ranking members of their respective intelligence committees—the so-called Gang of Eight. Money for the operation can then be reprogrammed from previous appropriations, as needed, by the relevant congressional committees, which also can be briefed.

“The Finding was focussed on undermining Iran’s nuclear ambitions and trying to undermine the government through regime change,” a person familiar with its contents said, and involved “working with opposition groups and passing money.” The Finding provided for a whole new range of activities in southern Iran and in the areas, in the east, where Baluchi political opposition is strong, he said.

Although some legislators were troubled by aspects of the Finding, and “there was a significant amount of high-level discussion” about it, according to the source familiar with it, the funding for the escalation was approved. In other words, some members of the Democratic leadership—Congress has been under Democratic control since the 2006 elections—were willing, in secret, to go along with the Administration in expanding covert activities directed at Iran, while the Party’s presumptive candidate for President, Barack Obama, has said that he favors direct talks and diplomacy.

1. Iran can take care of itself, Iraq couldn't. Attacking Iraq was a cheap shot.
Iran will leave us very bloody. We can't let bush do this.

9. OUr military has its hands full in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not sure we
can handle having our supply lines cut or have a human wave descend on us from Iran.

11. We bled the USSR, that was payback for vietnam
by giving them sophisticated weapons and billions of dollars of support they won.

Hopefully this will not involve the us.

5. Conventional politicians taking a principled stand.
I would like to hear McCain, Hillary and Obama speak out against this...
This won't happen. They are all in AIPAC's pocket. This is what our former republic has degenerated to.
Pay attention to the AIPAC sponsored resolution now moving through Congress. It calls for a naval blockade of Iran, and gives Bush and Cheney carte blanche to initiate aggressive preemptive war against Iran, which will be a catastrophe for us, and moreover, will be the end of Israel, as no one knows the outcome of the regional and probably world conflagration, military and financial, which such madness and treason would set off. Not even one national politician of either party has had the courage to speak out against this resolution. Only the resistance of the senior US military has prevented disaster so far. But, as Chairman Mao reportedly said, "All political power grows from the barrel of a gun" and such will be the craven faux American politicians' fate also. In this sense the loyal US military are truly defending our freedom - and obeying their oath to the Constitution.

13. The day after Obama sealed the Delegates he and Hillary bowed before AIPAQ
In two war mongering speeches fully supporting Iran. In fairness, Hillary's was a shade more supportive but both bowed before the thrown to do "whatever it takes" to keep Iran from going nuclear and "nothing was off the table."

4. There is no complaining because we now know the REAL REASON for attacking Iran.
Back before the attack on Iraq, the public assumed that self-defense was at least part of the reason for attacking Iraq. The world knows now that the only reason was to steal Iraqi oil.

The powers that rule the U.S. are only interested in stealing Iran's oil, or at least cutting off its supply to create a shortage of oil, in order to drive the price up. It worked with Iraq. Now they are looking to promote the same effect by shutting down Iran's oil production.

People aren't complaining because they know it will do little good. The U.S. ruling cabal have only one vision: to increase next quarter's profits. They will make out handsomely. Congress is nothing but a group of useless toadies. The people in this country have become totally beaten down.

The only way any real change is going to take place, sadly, is if there is another great depression and the "middle rich" start hurting in their McMansions. The masses are going to hurt real bad before this is over.

7. Whats not understood
Whats not understood is that Iraq is not ruled by the majority Shia of which Iran is Shia as well. For those of you not old enough to recall the history of the region Iraq and Iran fought a war for some eight years to a draw. At the time Iraq was ruled by Saddam a Sunni. The Sunni are and were a minority in Iraq and the US backed Saddam in that war. The fact that Iraq is now ruled by the Shia means that we lost that war years after the fact. If we or Israel start something in Iran don't be surprised if Iraq takes the side of Iran. Iran is already pointing its big guns at Israels nuclear facility and is very capable of taking them out. If the US is not careful this could be our Waterloo in the middle east. This govt is being run by "born agains" that think somehow their magic genie in the sky is pulling the strings and Israel and the US cannot lose based on biblical interpretation.
