Dems Giving McCain a Big Pass
I just saw John McCain very gravely lamenting Barack Obama's decision not to accept public financing for the general election campaign and opining about what it says about Obama's ethics and trustworthiness. And I must confess that I'm a little confused why more Democrats are not hitting this preening peacock with the fact that he is as we speak breaking the campaign finance laws and specifically breaking the law on accepting public financing. Having opted into the system and gotten the advantage of it he's now spending freely in defiance of the caps he agreed not to spend over. Not a commitment to Common Cause to try to come to deal, but a legally binding commitment to say within the public system for the primaries (which, by FEC rules, continues through the nominating conventions).

It's almost surreal that McCain is being allowed to get on his high horse on anything remotely connected to the public financing system.

You can say the press should be hitting him on this. But the truth is that this will only become an issue, if Democrats and Obama-surrogates make it an issue. The guy is not only 'breaking his word' he's breaking the law. But he's so awash in his own self-righteousness that I'm not even sure this counts as hypocrisy -- at least conscious hypocrisy -- since just as is the case with the lobbyists he surrounds himself with I think his self-righteousness makes it all invisible to him.

1. There's nothing we can say to the McSame supporters that will get them to switch
Believe me, I've tried.

Besides, most of us are busy watching the FISA train wreck, hoping that Obama will get his finger out of the wind and take a stand against this insanity.

6. But the reason we *MUST* Talk about this is to keep *OUR* supporters "on the ranch".
*EVERY* lie our opponents tell about us must be rigorously,
vigorously debunked *FAST AND LOUD*. Anything we allow
to "stick" will hurt our chances in November.

7. The only thing that can kill us in Nov. is election fraud
Right now, a turtle in a suit could beat McSame. The election fraud is STILL not dealt with, as we asked in 2006 after the Dems took Congress.

Consider this: No Republican has been elected to the presidency for 16 years.

9. You're far more optimistic than I am, sorry to say. (NT)

10. I'm not optimistic
I fully expect the Repubs to steal the election again. I'm just saying that the problem isn't in the voter base.

2. McCain didn't just suck up to lobbyists -- he was FUCKING his lobbyist.
Guess no one remembers Vicki Iseman.

3. What Democrat has enough balls to hit him on this hard, and what MSM outlet would report it?

4. I don't know why Democratics expect the media to come up with the stories
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 04:40 PM by Cronus Protagonist
They have not done that for a long, long time. If you want a story in the news, you must put it there by having someone important hold a press conference and put it into the media stream. The Republics have known this for years, but some, or most, Democratics seem to expect more than just a megaphone and echo chamber from the media, they seem to want the stenographers to do more. The media talking heads cannot do it for a multitude of reasons. Failure to recognize this costs us a lot of elections.

5. I have known for a long time that...
we were in some alternate nightmare world with the corporate media, but I have been losing my mind why Obama surrogates at least have not been forcefully and with cutting humor pushing back on the sheer chutzpah and stunning hypocrisy of the McCain camp -- only Begala did it last week.

I have also wondered why the netroots have not been highlighting more either...finally...

8. The M$M wants to level the playing field because it means more of a fight for them to cover.
They don't want to expose McLame because he is so far behind. They are only concerned with finding trouble for Obama until the playing field is leveled.
