Finding a FREE donor of sperm would be easy. The article, you see, spoke of their using their stimulus check to pay off their bill for sperm. So, we know they paid a hefty price for their sperm.

As I noted in my post, in clear and plain English, I understand why they chose to buy sperm, rather than recruit. It's because of the legal implications, and because of that, they chose to buy sperm, rather than solicit it, perhaps from someone they know, as at least one couple did when they recruited David Crosby as a sperm donor.

Even someone they know may not be suitable for them. It makes sense they'd choose to go through a sperm bank and an insemination process.

As I have said, I'm perfectly happy for this couple and their daughter. For legal reasons, buying the sperm is the only way to go. The moms don't want to have to share legal rights with the sperm donor, and the sperm donor doesn't want to be liable for the child's support. Therefore, buying sperm rather than recruiting a David Crosby is clearly the right choice for a lesbian couple that wants to have a child.

I was just being silly earlier when I posted the comment about the Sahara.

I absolutely agree that the sperm bank, with its regimens for screening, liability insurance, and lack of continuing legal entanglement, make it the only sound choice for lesbian couples wanting to parent a child. Doing it without the sperm bank, by picking some guy, is a disaster waiting to happen. That gives the biological father greater legal rights than one of the lesbians (the one who doesn't bear the child), and should be avoided.

gotta ask them to get tested for various diseases and I imagine the asker foots the bill for that. (Yeah, it's an uncomfortable situation "Hey, can we use your sperm and by the way we want to make sure you don't have any nasty social diseases." but better safe than sorry.) Then too, you might need a lawyer's services to draw up some sort of contract so that it is clearly established what relationship, if any, the donor will have with the offspring in order to forestall any sort of legal battles that could turn up later on down the road.
